Chapter 9 - The Legacy We Choose

Spring arrived soft and green. Chloe’s first design project broke ground—twelve small, bright homes for single‑parent families, built on land my father donated. She asked me to speak at the opening. “You’re the reason this exists,” she said. “Don’t say no.”
I stood before a crowd of neighbors, workers, and families, and told the truth. “Success isn’t about what you own,” I said. “It’s about who you lift up. My grandmother knew that. She left a legacy of courage, not cash. Today, we build something she’d be proud of.”
My parents stood in the front row, heads held high, not for status—but for pride. My mother wiped happy tears. My father clapped loudest. Afterward, a woman stepped forward—one of the new homeowners. “Thank you,” she said. “For giving us a chance.”
That night, I called Grandma’s old number—the one she’d kept until the end. It was disconnected, of course. But I spoke anyway. “We’re fixing it,” I whispered. “The right way.”

Adrian found me on the balcony. “You okay?”
“Better than okay,” I smiled. “I finally understand what she meant.”
