Chapter 2 - The Name That Changed Everything

Adrian reached the fountain, held out his hand, and pulled me gently to my feet. He wrapped Lily in his suit jacket first, kissed her wet hair, then turned his gaze to my family—one by one, slow and deliberate. “Which one of you pushed my wife and daughter?”
My father recovered fast, straightening his tuxedo. “This is private property. Who do you think you are?”
“Adrian Hale,” he said, and the name landed like a stone in still water. “Founder of Hale Global. And Nora’s husband of nearly four years.”
My mother’s hand flew to her mouth. Mark’s glass froze halfway to his lips. Chloe stared like I had grown a second head. “Hale?” my father stammered. “The tech billionaire?”
“The very same,” Adrian said. “You’ve sat across tables from me at galas. Pitched me deals. Called me ‘sir.’ All while your family treated mine like garbage.”
“I didn’t know—”
“You knew exactly who she was,” Adrian cut in. “You just didn’t care until it mattered to you.”
I stood dripping, suddenly steady. “I didn’t tell you because I knew this would happen. You never loved me—you only loved what I could bring you.”
Chloe found her voice, shrill and shaky. “You hid him? On purpose?”
“I protected him from you,” I corrected. “And I protected myself. You would have used him to buy your way into every country club in the state.”
Mark tried to step forward, charming smile cracking. “Look, man—misunderstanding—we can fix this—”
“You fixed nothing tonight,” Adrian said. “You showed exactly who you are. And we’re done watching.”
He took my hand, Lily tucked between us, and we walked out. No one called after us. No one moved until the car doors closed. As we drove away, Lily leaned her head on my arm. “Why were they mean, Daddy?”
May you like
Adrian stroked her hair. “Because they forgot what matters, bug. Not money. Not titles. People.”
I looked back once—my parents still by the fountain, pale and frozen, Chloe clutching her stained dress like it was the only thing holding her up. I didn’t look back again.
