Chapter 10 - The Home We Built

One year after the fountain, we planted a white rose bush in our garden—for new beginnings, for the past finally laid to rest. Lily helped dig the hole, dirt on her cheeks, singing off‑key. My parents brought trowels. Chloe brought a plaque: Love builds where money cannot reach.

We didn’t have a fairy‑tale ending. My father still had bad days; my mother still slipped into old habits; Chloe still got nervous before presentations. But we showed up. We listened. We apologized when we were wrong.

Lily ran between us, laughing. “Grandpa! Will the flowers grow tall?”

He smiled, kneeling beside her. “They will. If we give them time. And care. And don’t dig them up to check.”

I looked at them all—my family, messy and imperfect and mine. Adrian slipped his arm around my waist. “Happy?” he asked quietly.

“More than,” I said. “I thought I’d lost everything that day. Turns out I finally found it.”

We didn’t get the family we started with. We got the one we chose—built on honesty, forgiveness, and love that didn’t need a title or a bank balance to be real. And that was more than enough.
