Chapter 5: The Pendant On The Floor

I stood in bedroom doorway holding daughter against chest. Bunny pressed between us, cream fur damp from tears. Warm tungsten light spilled from hallway into room, same pendant glow from dining area still burning behind us. Woman hovered two feet back, hand near chest, cream satin blouse catching light.

Daughter breathed hard against my shoulder. Small body shaking. I didn't move. Bedroom evidence still fresh on bed behind me — drawer pulled half open, things inside not right. I had seen enough to stop trusting words.

Then something glinted.

Thin chain caught on bedroom door hinge. Tiny circular pendant snagged, swinging slightly where door had been forced shut. Thin circular pendant matched cream blouse. Her necklace. I stared at it.

"Your pendant," I said.

Woman's hand flew to throat. Fingers found empty skin where chain should have sat. Color left her face.

"Must have snagged earlier," she said. "When I checked on her."

I didn't answer. Door hinge sat chest-high on girl's side. Not place necklace snags by accident. Snag meant close contact. Meant struggle near doorway. Meant she had been inside room when she claimed she hadn't.

I shifted daughter to left arm. Reached with right hand, didn't touch pendant. Left it hanging. Pulled phone from pocket with thumb.

"Don't touch it," I said.

Woman stepped forward. "It's just necklace. Let me get it."

I blocked doorway with shoulder. Kept daughter shielded behind me.

"Stay there," I said.

Second thing needed checking. Her timeline. She had said errand. Said grocery run. Said she left house 6:30, back 7:15, girl alone watching cartoons. Said she wasn't in bedroom at all.

I opened photos on phone. Not camera app — recent photos. She had taken picture of girl earlier, sent to her sister. I remembered seeing flash. I scrolled.

Timestamp 6:47 p.m. Girl on bedroom floor, bunny beside her, door closed behind. Woman's shadow visible in mirror. Same cream blouse.

Next photo 6:52 p.m. Girl in laundry room doorway, face red. No one else in frame but woman's hand visible at edge, gripping doorframe.

Next photo 6:58 p.m. My own kitchen, time-stamped from security app notification I had ignored. Woman alone with girl in background, laundry room light on.

All during claimed errand window.

My thumb hovered over screen. Breath caught. Cold spread through chest.

"You were home at 6:47," I said. Showed phone screen.

She glanced, looked away fast.

"That's old," she said. "Time wrong."

I tapped photo info. Location tag: home. Time: 6:47 p.m. Today.

"Errand was 6:30 to 7:15," I said. "You were here entire time."

"No," she said. "I ran out quick. Phone clock off."

"Phone clock syncs automatically," I said. "Check."

Daughter whimpered against my shoulder. I tightened hold. Kissed top of blonde bob without looking away from woman.

Woman tried new angle. Hands spread, palms up.

"I stepped back in because she called," she said. "She needed something. That's not lying."

"You said you weren't in bedroom at all," I said. "Pendant says you were. Photos say you were. Which is it?"

Silence stretched. Tungsten lamp hummed behind us. Glassware still on dining table down hall, untouched.

She swallowed. Fingers twisted hem of blouse.

"I went to get laundry," she said. Voice thinner now. "She followed me. Got upset."

"She took me into laundry room," I said, repeating daughter's words verbatim from dining table. "Not followed. Took."

Woman shook head. "She's confused. Three years old. Confuses words."

Three to five, I thought. Old enough to point. Old enough to remember being pulled.

I lifted phone higher. Started recording video. Slow pan: pendant on hinge, then bedroom interior, then photo timestamps on screen. Didn't narrate. Let evidence speak. Made sure hallway light caught thin circular pendant clearly.

Document meant proof outside memory. Document meant leverage gone.

"I'm saving this," I said.

Woman's eyes tracked phone. Panic broke through defensive mask.

"Don't do that," she said. "Don't make this bigger than it is."

"It already is bigger," I said.

Daughter pointed past woman toward hallway. Index finger extended, bunny still clutched tight to chest with other arm. Same pointing gesture from final video shot. She didn't speak, just pointed where camera waited in living room.

I understood. Hallway camera held more.

Woman saw point. Saw phone recording. Realized timeline collapsed and physical trace tied her blouse to doorway. Shoulders dropped. No longer peak antagonism. Fear underneath.

"Please stop filming," she said. Last attempt at control.

I stopped recording but didn't lower phone. Hit share, sent clip to my own cloud and to brother, one tap. Backup created before anyone could delete.

Pendant still swung on hinge, catching warm light, thin circle turning slowly.

I stayed in doorway, daughter protected against me, evidence secured on phone. Circumstantial now concrete.
