Chapter 10: Sheriff At The Door

Knock hit door. Hard. Even. Second knock before I could move.
Girl flinched against my leg. Bunny crushed to her chest. Woman stood near table. Arms crossed. Face pale.
I held girl tighter. Said stay behind me. Opened door.
Deputy stood on porch. County sheriff windbreaker. Radio on shoulder. Flashlight off but hand near belt. Late twenties. Calm eyes. Looked past me to living room.
"Mr. Harris? Dispatch said child involved disturbance. Need check welfare," he said.
I nodded. Throat dry. Stepped aside.
"Come in. Need show you something," I said.
He entered. Door stayed open. Cold night air followed him. He glanced at girl, then woman. Nodded to both.
"Evening, folks. I'm Deputy Cole. Everyone safe right now?" he said.
Woman answered fast. "We're fine. Misunderstanding. My stepdaughter got upset. No need for—"
I cut in. Held phone out. Screen lit.
"Need you see this first. Then decide," I said.
Deputy took phone. I swiped to gallery. Two clips queued. Time stamps burned in corner.
"Laundry room camera. Tonight. 7:42 PM. Then bedroom. 7:51 PM," I said.
He pressed play. Held phone level. Laundry clip played. Grainy. Wide angle. Girl small in frame. Woman gripped her wrist. Pulled her into laundry room. Door half closed. Sound muffled. Girl crying. Woman's mouth tight. Rough. Not gentle.
Deputy watched without blinking. Jaw tightened.
Second clip. Bedroom. Toys on floor. Woman shoved girl toward bed. Girl stumbled. Fell to knees. Woman pointed finger. Leaned close. Girl curled around bunny. Shoulders shook.
He replayed three seconds. Paused. Looked at woman.
"Ma'am, I need step over here with me. Separate for statements," he said.
Woman swallowed. Forced smile.
"That looks worse than it was. I was disciplining her. She wouldn't listen. I didn't hurt her," she said.
Deputy kept voice even. Gestured to dining corner.
"Understood. We'll document your account. Step there please," he said.
She moved. Slow. Hands twisting pendant. I stayed near girl. Deputy crouched down to girl eye level. Kept distance. Soft tone.
"Hey sweetheart. I'm Cole. I help keep kids safe. Can I talk to you? Dad stays right here," he said.
Girl hid face in bunny. Nodded small.
I knelt beside her. Arm around her. Bunny between us. Her hand white-knuckled around its ear.
Deputy pulled small notebook. No pen pointed at her.
"Can you tell me where bunny was when that happened?" he said.
Girl whispered. "With me."
"You held bunny whole time?" he said.
She nodded. Tears started again.
"What happened in laundry room?" he said.
She pointed toward hallway. Voice thin.
"She took me in there. Held my arm. Hurt," she said.
Deputy glanced at her wrist. Faint red mark. Didn't touch.
"Thank you for telling me. Brave," he said. "What happened in your room after?"
Girl pressed closer to me. Bunny damp with tears.
"She pushed me. Said be quiet. Said not tell daddy," she said.
I felt my chest tighten. Hand shook holding her. Deputy noted words verbatim. No leading. No repeat.
"Did anyone tell you to say that?" he said.
Girl shook head hard.
"No. Check camera, daddy. I said that," she said.
Deputy nodded. Stood. Turned to me.
"Sir, I need copy video. And look at rooms you mentioned. Consent?" he said.
"Yes. Take all you need," I said.
He pulled body cam. Activated. Red light blinked.
"Recording for report. Ma'am, I need your statement now," he said.
Woman spoke fast. Words tumbled.
"We were playing. She slipped in laundry. In bedroom I raised voice. Never pushed. Camera angle misleading. She's confused. Wants attention," she said.
Deputy wrote. Compared to clips timeline.
"Video shows grip and push. Your statement noted as contradicting video," he said.
Woman eyes widened. Hand to chest.
"You're taking his phone over my word?"
"Evidence over account. Procedure," he said. He turned to me. "Sir, I need Airdrop or cable. Copy files to evidence drive. Also need photos of marks."
I handed phone again. He connected department tablet. Progress bar crawled. 7:42 and 7:51 copied. Hash verified.
He photographed laundry room. Door scuff. Basket overturned. Bedroom floor. Imprint where girl fell. Girl wrist with scale ruler. Girl nodded before each shot. I held bunny with her for comfort.
Deputy stepped outside to radio. Voice low.
"Central, 10-97 Code 4, need report number. Child welfare, video evidence secured. One juvenile, one adult female separated. No arrest at this time. Request CPS notify and medical eval referral," he said.
Dispatch crackled. Report number given.
He returned. Handed me card. Report number handwritten.
"Report filed. Video copied. Chain of custody logged. She stays separated tonight. No contact with child until CPS and follow-up," he said. He looked at girl. Softened.
"She stays with you. I recommend urgent care tonight for documentation. Even if marks fade," he said.
I lifted girl. Bunny still clutched. Her head on my shoulder.
"We go now?" I said.
"Tonight. Keep phone charged. Don't delete originals," he said.
Woman stood frozen in corner. Deputy positioned between us.
"Ma'am, you remain in living room. No follow to hospital. Investigator will contact you tomorrow," he said.
Girl whispered against my neck. "Don't leave bunny."
I tightened hold.
"Never," I said.
May you like
Deputy held door open. Night air again. Cruiser lights flashed silent on street.
We stepped past woman. She didn't speak. Pendant caught light. Hand shaking.
