Chapter 4: Look Inside My Room

Girl tugged my sleeve. Small fingers cold. Bunny crushed against chest, pink ribbon hanging loose now. She didn't look at woman. Looked at me.

"Daddy, There's more." Voice thin, cracked. Breath hitched between words.

I crouched. Eye level with her. Hand on her shoulder, steady.

"More?" I said.

She swallowed. Pointed toward hallway. Down past laundry room. Toward her bedroom door.

"Look inside my room."

Woman stepped closer. Heels silent on hardwood. Hand went to pendant at throat. Twisted it.

"Wait, you don't need." She said it soft, urgent. Smile stretched too tight. "She's tired. She's been worked up all night. Let's just sit down, talk calm."

Girl flinched at sound of woman's voice. Pressed harder into my side. Bunny's ear bent under her chin.

I stood. Kept girl against leg. Started toward hallway. Woman trailed. Two steps behind. Hand reached, didn't touch.

"Wait, you don't need to do this right now," she said again. Louder. "Her room's a mess. I've been meaning to clean it."

Hall light warm, tungsten glow spilling from dining area. Her bedroom door half open. Nightlight glowed amber inside. Pink walls. Small bed unmade.

Girl stopped at threshold. Pointed. Not at bed. At closet.

Closet door closed. White wooden knob. Chair pulled in front of it. Small pink chair, legs scraping floor marks near door.

My stomach dropped.

"Why chair there?" I asked.

Woman answered too fast. "She likes forts. She builds forts. I moved it for her earlier."

Girl shook head. Whispered, "She locked it."

I moved chair. Wood light. Hands sweating. Knob stuck. Locked from outside. Small hook latch high up, out of girl's reach.

"Where's key?" I said.

Woman didn't answer. Arms crossed over cream blouse now. Fingers dug into sleeves.

I lifted hook. Opened door.

Closet small. Dark. Blanket folded on floor. Not folded neatly. Wadded. Cup with water tipped over, stain dark on carpet. And smell — sour, trapped air, laundry detergent and tears.

Girl didn't follow inside. Stayed in doorway, bunny tight. Pink ribbon slipped down bunny's neck, threads pulled loose where she'd yanked it.

"She said stay in there till I stopped crying," girl whispered. "She said bunny needed timeout too."

Woman stepped forward. Hands up, palms out.

"That is not— I put her in there for two minutes to calm down. Parenting is hard. You weren't home. She wouldn't stop screaming."

I knelt. Ran hand over blanket. Damp corner. Cold. Turned on closet light. Single bulb.

Then saw arm. Girl's arm. She'd pushed sleeve up clutching bunny. Three small fingertip bruises on outer arm. Faint purple-gray, fresh. Size matched adult hand. Not fall. Not bump.

Breath caught. I didn't touch bruise. Just looked.

"Who did this?" I said. Voice low.

Woman stared at bruise. Color left face. "She fell at school. On playground. Ask teacher."

Girl shook head hard. Tears finally spilled again. "No. She grabbed me. In laundry room, then in closet. She squeezed."

I reached for girl. Pulled her into chest. She buried face in navy polo, bunny pressed between us. Body shaking hard now, not silent crying — deep, ragged sobs she'd held all night.

Woman's hands dropped. Voice cracked. "You're taking her word over mine? Really? I've been here every day while you worked."

I looked at wadded blanket, tipped cup, locked hook, ribbon loose, bruises matching grip. Pattern clicked. Not one bad night. Not single timeout. Laundry room isolation, then closet. Two places. Same method. Hidden spots. Latch out of reach.

This wasn't confusion. This was routine.

I stood, girl in arms. Bunny still clutched, ribbon trailing over my forearm.

"Don't follow us," I said. Backed out of closet. Into bedroom. Toward door.

Woman stayed pinned near doorway. Hand on chest again, defensive. Eyes wide, not soft now — calculating, cornered.

Girl's breath slowed against my neck. Whispered, "Don't leave me."

I held tighter. Shifted weight to block doorway with shoulder. Free hand already reaching for phone in pocket.

Second evidence secured. Not just video. Physical. Bruise, locked closet, witness in my arms.
