"The stone church," Willa gasped from Clara’s arms. "Like in Mama’s picture!"
Nathaniel looked at Clara, a grim, electric spark igniting in his eyes. "The Old Mission Church on the ridge. It burned down fifteen years ago. Bell never rebuilt it because he claimed the ground was unstable. But it wasn't unstable. Samuel Bell was buried under the sanctuary."
"That’s where the true deed is," Clara breathed. "The charter that breaks Thomas Bell forever."
Above them, the deep, mournful whistle of the midnight train echoed through the frozen earth.
