Chapter 19 - The Widow's Reckoning

Silence settled over the mountain pass—a deep, unnatural quiet broken only by the whistling wind and the soft patter of falling snow.

Clara pushed herself up from the drift, spitting pine needles and ice. Her entire body ached with a dull, throbbing pain, but she was alive. Beside her, Nathaniel lay motionless, his eyes closed, snow dusting his dark lashes.

"Nathaniel!" Clara gasped, crawling over to him in terror. She pressed her trembling fingers against the cold skin of his throat.

For two agonizing heartbeats, there was nothing.

Then, a slow, steady pulse thudded beneath her fingertips. Nathaniel groaned softly, his eyelids fluttering open. He looked up at Clara’s soot-streaked, tear-stained face, and a weak, crooked smirk touched his lips.

"Did you... get the ledger?" he whispered hoarsely.

Clara let out a ragged sob that turned into a half-laugh. She patted the heavy leather book pressed firmly against her ribs beneath her shredded lace. "I got it, you stubborn idiot."

"Good," Nathaniel muttered, closing his eyes again with a sigh of relief. "Because I really didn't want to jump out of a train for nothing."

Torches flickered down the railway line. The sound of running boots and shouting men echoed through the pines.

"Clara! Nathaniel!" Agnes’s booming voice carried across the ridge.

Moments later, Agnes, accompanied by a dozen miners carrying lanterns, burst through the brush. Willa was riding atop a burly blacksmith's shoulders, her small face glowing with pure joy as she spotted them.

"Mama Clara!" the little girl cried, sliding down and barreling through the snow until she crashed into Clara’s arms. Clara held the child tightly, burying her face in Willa’s hair, letting the tears fall freely for the first time since she had walked into that cursed church in town.

Agnes knelt beside Nathaniel, quickly wrapping a clean canvas tourniquet around his bleeding arm. "The depot is secure. The Pinkertons surrendered the moment the engine fell into the gorge. Bartholomew Sterling is in custody, screaming for a doctor."

"He doesn't need a doctor," Clara said, standing up with Willa safely in her arms. She looked down at the town lights beginning to flicker back on in the valley below. "He needs a judge."
