Chapter 6 - The Charity Gala Trap

The Grand Ballroom of the St. Regis was a spectacle of American high society. Crystal chandeliers hung like frozen waterfalls from the gilded ceilings, casting brilliant light across tables draped in silver silk, adorned with towering arrangements of white orchids.
Billionaires, senators, Hollywood celebrities, and media moguls mingled, sipping Dom Pérignon and discussing philanthropic pledges. Flashes from high-end society photographers illuminated the room every few seconds.
At the center of the stage stood a massive, eighty-foot LED screen displaying the banner: **THE VANCE FOUNDATION: GIVING VOICE TO THE VOICELESS.**
At precisely 8:15 PM, the master of ceremonies took the podium.
“Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests,” the host’s voice boomed over the state-of-the-art sound system. “Tonight, we celebrate another year of incredible generosity. And please, join me in welcoming the honorary chairwoman of the Vance Foundation, whose tireless devotion to protecting our most vulnerable children has inspired us all—Mrs. Vanessa Vance!”
Polite, thunderous applause erupted throughout the ballroom.
From behind the velvet curtains on stage left, Vanessa emerged.
To the untrained eye, she looked radiant. Her hair had been pinned back into place; high-coverage concealer masked the pale terror in her skin; her emerald-cut diamond earrings sparkled under the spotlights. But beneath the surface, she was walking to her execution. Marcus walked directly behind her, dressed in a sharp tuxedo, his hand hovering inches from the concealed firearm inside his jacket, his eyes locked on her back.
Vanessa forced a tight, frozen smile, waving to the crowd as she approached the podium. Her heart was beating so hard she could hear it roaring in her ears. She scanned the audience, desperately hoping Christian was bluffing, hoping this was just an attempt to humiliate her privately before letting her sign a quiet NDA.
Then, from the center doors of the ballroom, Christian Vance walked in.
The room went instantly quiet. Heads turned. Christian rarely attended social galas; his presence alone was enough to alter the dynamic of any room. He didn't smile. He didn't acknowledge the greetings of CEOs or foreign dignitaries. He walked down the center aisle with the terrifying grace of an executioner approaching the scaffold.
He didn't take a seat. He walked straight up the stage stairs, stepping beside Vanessa at the podium.
The crowd broke into spontaneous applause at the sight of the power couple together on stage.
Vanessa looked up at him, her lips trembling beneath her lipstick. “Christian… please,” she whispered off-mic. “Don't do this. I’m begging you.”
Christian adjusted the microphone. The room fell into absolute, expectant silence.
“Good evening, everyone,” Christian began, his deep, resonant voice echoing clearly through the ballroom. “Tonight is about giving a voice to the voiceless. It is about protecting the innocent from monsters who operate in the dark.”
Vanessa’s knees nearly buckled.
“For the past year, my wife, Vanessa, has stood as the public face of this charity. She has spoken passionately about ending cruelty against children. But tonight… I believe it is time we show you the true extent of her dedication.”

Christian raised his left hand and signaled the audiovisual booth at the back of the room.
