Chapter 4 - The House of Lies

The silence that followed was suffocating.
Vanessa remained on her knees, her manicured hands hovering over the carpet, realizing the mountain of evidence had just caved in on top of her. The facade of the elegant, maternal stepmother was entirely dead.
Christian looked at her as if she were a venomous insect.
“Three weeks ago,” Christian said, his voice dropping into a register that made the hotel manager visibly shudder, “Emily told me on the phone that she fell down the stairs at the Hamptons estate. You took the phone from her and said she was clumsy. You were laughing.”
“Christian…”
“I bought you a seven-million-dollar necklace for your anniversary last month because you told me you were dedicating your life to raising my daughter with the love her mother never got to finish giving her.” Christian took a slow, agonizing step toward her. “You didn't marry me for a family, Vanessa. You married me for an empire. And you took out your hatred of my late wife on my seven-year-old child.”
Marcus stepped forward, holding a black leather dossier. “Sir. We executed the secondary sweep you ordered while you were in transit from Tokyo.”
Vanessa snapped her head toward Marcus. “What secondary sweep?”
“Did you really think I wouldn't notice the sudden restructuring of the Vance Family Trust accounts?” Christian asked coldly.
Marcus opened the folder. “Over the past five months, Mrs. Vance has transferred approximately four point two million dollars out of Emily’s designated trust fund into an offshore shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under the name ‘Astraea Holdings.’ The signatory on that account is Vanessa Vance, co-signed by an individual named Julian Croft.”
Vanessa went completely rigid. Julian Croft was her former personal trainer and long-time secret lover—a man she had been funneling Christian’s fortune to, plotting her eventual divorce once Emily turned ten and the trust fund fully vested.
“Julian?” Christian chuckled, a dark, humorless sound that sent chills down everyone’s spine. “You thought you could rob my daughter’s inheritance while breaking her bones?”
“You don't understand…” Vanessa pleaded, her voice cracking into hysteria. “Julian threatened me! He blackmailed me! He made me transfer that money!”
“Julian Croft was detained forty-five minutes ago at JFK Airport trying to board a flight to Zurich,” Marcus stated clinically. “He has already surrendered his phone, his laptop, and the bank routing numbers. In exchange for prosecutorial leniency, he has provided a sworn affidavit stating that the entire embezzlement scheme was orchestrated by you, Mrs. Vance.”
Vanessa collapsed entirely, sitting back on her heels, staring at the floor. The web of deceit, money laundering, and violence she had spent two years carefully constructing had evaporated in less than thirty minutes.
“Daddy…” Emily’s small voice pierced the heavy tension.
Christian immediately turned away from Vanessa. The lethal coldness in his demeanor vanished in an instant, replaced by an overwhelming, tender devotion. He walked back over to his daughter.
Dr. Hayes had wrapped Emily in a warm cashmere blanket. She looked so tiny, so fragile amidst the immense wealth of the suite.
Christian sat beside her, gently taking her small hand in his. “I’m here, baby. Daddy is right here.”
“Are the bad things going to stop now?” Emily whispered, her eyes searching his face for certainty. “Is she going to leave?”
Christian lifted his daughter’s hand and kissed her knuckles, his heart shattering at the realization of how blind his corporate ambitions had made him. He had conquered Wall Street, built a fortune of billions, yet had failed to protect the only piece of his late wife he had left.
“Yes, Emily,” Christian whispered, a vow sealed in blood and steel. “The bad things stop tonight. She will never touch you, never speak to you, and never look at you again.”
He looked up at Marcus.
“Take Emily to the private penthouse suite on the forty-first floor with Dr. Hayes and two armed details. Ensure she has warm soup, hot chocolate, and anything she wants.”
“Understood, Mr. Vance.”
Emily looked hesitant, but Christian smiled warmly. “Go with Dr. Hayes, sweetheart. Daddy has some business to finish downstairs. I’ll be up to read you a bedtime story in one hour. I promise.”
Emily nodded, trusting him completely. Dr. Hayes gently lifted her and carried her out of the room, flanked by two stone-faced security guards.
The heavy suite doors clicked shut once more.
