Chapter 6 - Poison in the Velvet Glove

The rain had begun to fall over Malibu, slicking the winding asphalt of Pacific Coast Highway with treacherous sheets of water. By four in the morning, Julian Croft’s silver Mercedes pulled through the wrought-iron security gates of the Sterling estate. The gates opened smoothly, just as they always did.

Julian checked his reflection in the rearview mirror, adjusting his silk tie and practicing his expression of solemn, supportive grief. He had played this part before. When Elena died, he had stood beside Daniel at the graveside, weeping softly while clutching Daniel’s shoulder, promising that he would protect the family's legacy with his life.

He parked in the circular driveway, grabbed his leather briefcase containing the emergency power-of-attorney documents, and walked up the grand steps to the front door.

To his surprise, the heavy oak door was unlocked.

Julian stepped into the cavernous foyer. The lights were dimmed, casting long, dramatic shadows across the marble floors. The house was utterly silent, save for the rhythmic ticking of the antique clock in the grand hall.

"Daniel?" Julian called out, keeping his voice carefully tuned to an octave of respectful concern. "Daniel, it’s Julian. I came as soon as I heard about Victoria's arraignment. It's an unspeakable tragedy, my friend. I'm here to help."

"Are you, Julian?"

A voice spoke from the darkness of the mezzanine balcony.

Julian looked up. Daniel was standing at the top of the curved marble staircase, dressed in a black turtleneck and slacks, looking down at him like an emperor presiding over an execution. Slowly, Daniel descended the stairs, his footsteps echoing through the cavernous foyer.

"Daniel, thank God you're alright," Julian said, stepping forward with his hand outstretched. "Where is Oliver? How is the baby?"

Daniel ignored the hand, stopping three feet in front of him. "Oliver is alive, Julian. And the doctors managed to neutralize the Digoxin you and Camilla had been feeding him."

Julian froze. His outstretched hand remained suspended in mid-air for a fraction of a second before he slowly pulled it back. The warm, compassionate mask he had worn for seven years began to fissure.

"Digoxin?" Julian echoed, attempting a look of bafflement. "Camilla? Daniel, what are you talking about? Victoria is in jail—I just left the station trying to understand what kind of madness took over her mind—"

"Stop lying, Julian," Daniel said, his voice slicing through the air like a razor blade. "It's insulting to both of us."

Daniel pulled a tablet from his jacket and held it up. On the screen was a detailed bank transfer matrix.

"Three years ago, an account registered to your private shell corporation in the Cook Islands transferred two point five million dollars to a cosmetic surgery clinic in Geneva," Daniel recited calmly. "The recipient was Camilla Reyes. Six months later, Camilla reappeared in San Francisco with a completely fabricated identity, calling herself Victoria Sterling. Then came Elena’s car crash. The CAN-Bus overwrite module that locked her brakes was purchased through a logistics firm that lists you as its sole beneficial owner."

Julian’s face went rigid. The warmth drained from his eyes, leaving behind the cold, calculating gaze of a predator that had suddenly found itself inside a cage.

"You've been busy tonight, Daniel," Julian said softly, his voice dropping the pretense of friendship.

"And finally," Daniel continued, "the revised family trust. The one you drafted last month, which diverted eight hundred million dollars to Victoria if Oliver died before his first birthday. Emily heard Victoria on speakerphone with you, Julian. She heard you promise that I wouldn't live long enough to finish the audit."

Julian stood perfectly still for several long seconds. Then, slowly, a cold, mocking smile spread across his lips. He let out a low chuckle and tossed his leather briefcase onto an antique settee.

"I have to admit, Daniel... I underestimated that little maid," Julian said smoothly. "I thought she was just another expendable girl working for minimum wage. Who knew she possessed such keen hearing?"

"So it's true," Daniel said, his fists tightening. "Elena. Oliver. All of it."

"Of course it's true!" Julian snapped, his voice suddenly thick with years of buried resentment. "You think you deserved all of this, Daniel? You wrote a few algorithms in a garage twenty years ago, and the world handed you billions! Meanwhile, men like me—men who graduated top of their class at Harvard Law, men who actually understand how power and capital operate—we're forced to serve as your glorified paper-pushers! I built the legal structures that shielded your wealth from the IRS! I made you untouchable! Why should you have everything while I live on billable hours?"

"You murdered the mother of my child," Daniel growled, stepping closer, his towering frame casting a shadow over the attorney.

Julian didn't back down. He reached into his coat pocket. But before he could produce whatever was inside, the sound of multiple assault rifles charging echoed from the darkened hallways.

From behind the marble pillars, Marcus Kane and four armed security operatives stepped forward, their red laser sights converging directly on the center of Julian Croft's chest.

Julian froze, his hand still inside his coat.

"Take your hand out of your pocket very slowly, Mr. Croft," Marcus said with lethal calm. "Or we will test the tensile strength of that bespoke suit with five rounds of hollow-point ammunition."

Julian slowly raised his empty hands into the air, the cold smile vanishing from his face as he realized that the game was completely, irrevocably lost.
