Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master in the Shadows

Inside the bleak, windowless holding cell of the Malibu Sheriff’s Station, Victoria sat on the stainless-steel bench, shivering in an orange institutional jumpsuit that felt coarse against her delicate skin. The smell of disinfectant and damp concrete made her sick. She had spent the last eight hours pounding on the reinforced steel door, demanding her constitutional rights, but the deputies ignored her cries with practiced indifference.

Finally, at two o’clock in the morning, the heavy iron bolt slid back.

"Sterling," the guard barked. "Your attorney is here. Conference room two."

A venomous smirk returned to Victoria's lips. She stood up, brushed her hair back with her fingers, and held her head high as she was escorted down the sterile hallway. She knew her lifeline had arrived.

Sitting at the metal table in Conference Room Two was Julian Croft.

Julian was forty-two, exquisitely groomed, and Daniel Sterling’s most trusted senior estate planning attorney. He was the man who managed the Sterling Family Trust, an impenetrable legal fortress controlling over eight hundred million dollars in assets, real estate, and intellectual property. Wearing an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, Julian looked entirely at ease, though his cold gray eyes flickered with annoyance as Victoria entered the room.

The guard removed her handcuffs and stepped outside, leaving them alone behind the soundproof glass.

"You idiot," Julian hissed the moment the door clicked shut. "You absolute, reckless amateur."

Victoria sneered, sitting opposite him and leaning over the table. "Don't you dare speak to me like that, Julian! Do you have any idea what happened? That filthy housemaid caught me off guard! The baby wouldn't stop crying!"

"I told you to let the digitalis do its work!" Julian snapped in a vicious whisper. "Another two weeks of micro-dosing and the infant’s heart would have simply stopped during his sleep. The coroner would have ruled it an undiagnosed congenital defect—especially with the fake pediatric records I seeded in his medical file! But you threw him into a swimming pool? In broad daylight? In front of an ultra-HD security camera?!"

"I didn't know Daniel had installed that camera!" Victoria spat back. "He hid it behind the patio molding! He never told me!"

"Because he was already growing suspicious, you narcissistic fool!" Julian rubbed his temples, his breathing shallow. "Daniel isn't an ordinary mark. He built one of the largest data-security networks on the planet. You can't deceive a man whose entire career is based on detecting anomalies in secure systems!"

Victoria leaned closer, her eyes flashing with desperation. "None of that matters now. The trust agreement, Julian. Tell me the trust agreement is still solid."

Julian paused, opening his leather briefcase to reveal a thick, bound document bearing Daniel Sterling’s forged digital signature.

"The revised irrevocable trust," Julian murmured, tapping the paper. "I had it queued for automated probate filing. Under the clause we inserted, if Oliver dies before his first birthday, ninety percent of Daniel's estate transfers unconditionally to the surviving spouse as sole executor, bypassing Daniel's sister and all philanthropic foundations. If Daniel were to suffer an... untimely accident afterward, you would control eight hundred and fifty million dollars."

"Then execute it!" Victoria urged, her breath coming in ragged bursts. "Daniel doesn't know about you! He thinks this is just me! You can post my bail, arrange my transport to Ensenada, and finish Daniel off yourself! You have access to his private jet maintenance logs!"

Julian looked at her with utter contempt. "Post your bail? Victoria, you were recorded attempting to drown a ten-month-old infant on 4K digital video. The judge will set no bail tomorrow morning. You are facing life without parole at the California Institution for Women in Corona."

Victoria's face froze. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying you are a liability," Julian said coldly, closing his briefcase with a sharp snap. "Our partnership ended the second your foot touched that swimming pool. When I walk out of this room, I am heading to Daniel’s estate to play the role of the horrified, loyal family attorney. I will offer my deepest condolences, help him draft an ironclad divorce filing, and ensure that every shred of evidence linking your bank accounts to my offshore shell companies is permanently incinerated."

"You wouldn't dare betray me," Victoria hissed, lunging across the table, her fingernails clawing at Julian's lapel. "If I go down, I take you with me, Julian! I kept the audio files from our meeting in Saint-Tropez! I kept the receipts for the brake module that killed Elena!"

Julian didn't flinch. He leaned in until his lips were inches from her ear.

"Those files were stored on a private server hosted by CloudVault Technologies," Julian whispered smoothly. "A subsidiary of Daniel’s company. Which means Marcus Kane’s digital forensics team breached that server approximately twenty minutes ago."

Victoria’s eyes widened in sheer, paralyzing horror.

"Goodbye, Camilla," Julian said with a chilling smile. He stood up, knocked on the metal door for the guard, and walked out of the room without looking back, leaving Victoria screaming hysterically into the empty room.
