Chapter 10 - A Fresh Start

One year later.

The morning sun spilled across the kitchen floor of our new home—a cozy, sunlit craftsman house in a quiet neighborhood three towns over from my old life.

The garden was blooming with hydrangeas, and the front porch had a porch swing where Ava loved to sit and read her books after school.

I was standing at the kitchen island packing Ava’s lunchbox when she came sliding down the wooden hallway in her socks, holding her gold-starred unicorn jar.

She set it on the counter with a heavy thud. It was filled to the brim with coins, folded dollar bills, and reward tokens from school.

“Mom,” Ava said proudly, pointing to the slot at the top. “It’s completely full. Can we go to the bank today to put it into my real account?”

I smiled, pulling her into a tight hug and kissing the top of her head. “We sure can, sweetie. Right after school.”

My phone rang on the counter. It was a mail notification from the postal service. A letter had arrived from the state correctional facility—a letter from Nicole.

I picked up the envelope, looked at the return address, and without a second of hesitation or anger, walked over to the recycling bin and dropped it inside unopened.

I didn't need to read her excuses. I didn't need her late apologies. The dark chapter of our lives was closed, locked, and left behind.

Ava grabbed her backpack, took my hand, and bounded toward the front door.

“Ready, Mom?” she asked, looking up at me with bright, fearless eyes.

“Ready, baby,” I said, unlocking the door and stepping out into the bright, clear morning sun.
