Chapter 2 - The Hidden Cache

The voice on the phone didn't belong to a family member. It was low, raspy, and carried the unmistakable chill of someone accustomed to intimidation. Before I could process the threat, I heard heavy shuffling over the receiver, followed by a sharp command in the background, and then the line went dead.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I looked over at Ava, who was sitting on the living room sofa, her small fingers still holding the single silver dollar she’d managed to salvage from her smashed unicorn jar.
I picked up my phone and dialed Mark immediately.
“Mark,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “Someone just took Nicole’s phone. A man. He told me to drop the police report or Ava would pay for it.”
Mark didn't hesitate. “Stay in the house. Lock every single door and window. I’m ten minutes away, and I’m bringing two officers from the precinct.”
While I waited, I pulled up my security app again. The camera on our front porch hadn't picked up anything unusual after my parents and sister left, but the camera in my late husband Daniel’s home office—a room Nicole had no reason to enter—showed something else.
Nicole hadn't just taken the velvet box containing Daniel’s luxury watch. She had spent five full minutes rifling through his old filing cabinet. She had taken a small leather logbook and a sealed gray envelope Daniel had kept in his safe before his sudden passing two years ago.
Ten minutes later, Mark arrived with two uniformed police officers and Detective Vance, a sharp-eyed investigator with a no-nonsense demeanor.
“Mrs. Sarah,” Detective Vance said as he stepped into the foyer. “We stopped your sister at a pawn and jewelry shop downtown. She was trying to sell the watch. But when my officers searched her trunk, they found a lot more than luxury goods.”
“What did you find?” I asked.
“Three stolen handguns with altered serial numbers, forty thousand dollars in wrapped stacks of counterfeit cash, and a ledger listing several high-profile names in the city,” Detective Vance said gravely. “Your sister isn't just stealing cash from piggy banks, Sarah. She’s working as a courier for a local organized theft and money-laundering ring.”

My breath hitched. The reality hit me like ice water: Nicole hadn't smashed Ava’s jar out of spite or petty desperation. She needed quick cash to pay off a debt to dangerous people—and when that wasn't enough, she had looted Daniel’s safe to give them whatever value she could find.
And now, those exact people knew my address.
