Chapter 53 - Behind Iron Doors

An hour later, the Grand Hall was cleared, leaving behind the heavy scent of tension and spilled wine. Vincent led Maya and me through the private residential wing to the fortified penthouse on the top floor of the estate.

The heavy steel-reinforced mahogany doors clicked shut with the dull thud of magnetic locks. Outside, twenty handpicked guards loyal only to Vincent took positions along the corridor.

Maya sat on the oversized velvet sofa, clutching the stuffed rabbit I had bought her at the airport what felt like a lifetime ago. Her small shoulders trembled, the adrenaline of the evening finally wearing off into exhaustion.

"Mommy..." she whispered, her brown eyes welling with tears. "Are the bad men going to hurt Daddy?"

My heart squeezed. In just a few days, Vincent had gone from an imposing stranger in a bespoke black suit to someone she instinctively recognized as her father.

"No, sweetheart," I said, sitting beside her and pulling her into my lap. I kissed her forehead, smoothing down her dark, unruly curls. "Daddy is very strong. Nobody is going to hurt him, and nobody is ever going to hurt you."

Vincent stood by the floor-to-ceiling panoramic window, his back to us. His shoulders were tense beneath his tailored suit jacket, his reflection framed against the dark skyline of the estate grounds below.

"You shouldn't have brought her to the terminal, Elena," he said quietly, his voice carrying an edge of strain. "If that Codicil hadn't triggered—if my father’s encryption had failed—they would have executed you both."

"And if I hadn't stepped up, they would have put a bullet in your head," I countered, looking directly at his broad back. "Antonio had two rifles pointed at you. I didn't run across three continents for five years just to watch Maya’s father get slaughtered on a marble floor."

Vincent turned around slowly. The harsh, unyielding mask he presented to the underworld slipped, revealing the exhausted, wounded man beneath. He walked over and knelt down in front of the sofa, bringing his eyes level with ours.

He reached out, his hand hesitating for a fraction of a second before he gently rested his large palm against Maya's cheek. She leaned into his touch, closing her eyes.

"Thank you," Vincent said, looking up at me. His voice was thick with emotion. "You gave her a soul, Elena. You kept her innocent while living in the belly of hell."

"I did what any mother would do," I answered softly.

"You're not just her guardian," Vincent murmured, his eyes locking with mine with an intensity that made my pulse stutter. "You saved my family tonight."
