Chapter 34 - The Bloodline Compact

I walked straight past the medical team’s warnings, pushing open the heavy timber door to the recovery room.

Vincent was lying on the bed, his torso wrapped tight in fresh surgical tape. An IV drip was flushing fluids and antibiotics into his veins, bringing a trace of color back to his high cheekbones. He looked up the second I entered, reading the storm in my posture immediately.

"What happened?" he demanded, his voice steadying with dangerous focus. "Is Maya—"

"She’s alive. The marrow took," I said, stopping at the foot of his bed. "She’s recovering."

He closed his eyes for a long, shuddering second. I saw the brutal mafia Don completely dissolve, replaced by a father whose universe had just been spared from destruction. "Thank God."

"Don't thank Him yet," I said coldly. "Dante filed an emergency custody petition thirty minutes ago. He’s sending marshals and a corrupt judge’s order to take her from the clinic."

Vincent's eyes snapped open, blazing with lethal fury. "He wouldn't dare touch a pediatric ward openly."

"He just did!" I stepped closer, slamming my hand down on the footboard. "Why her, Vincent? Dante didn't care about a random five-year-old until three weeks ago! You told me it was about leverage against you, but this is a legal maneuver to claim conservatorship! Why does Dante want legal ownership of my child?!"

Vincent went completely still. The silence stretched between us, thick and suffocating, broken only by the rhythmic hum of the heart monitor.

"Vincent," I warned, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "I nearly lost my life tonight. I dragged you through sewage while you bled out. If you lie to me now, so help me God, I will take Maya and run where neither you nor Dante will ever find us."

Vincent looked at me, his jaw tightening until the cords in his neck stood out. Then, slowly, he reached toward the nightstand and pulled out a small, tarnished silver key on a leather cord.

"It wasn't my empire Dante wanted me to sign over tonight," Vincent admitted, his voice low and bitter. "The Syndicate isn't an autocracy, Claire. It's an alliance bound by an old bloodline trust established sixty years ago by my grandfather and Dante’s father."

My heart skipped a beat. "What does that have to do with Maya?"

"The trust dictates that the majority shareholder of the Syndicate’s legitimate assets—the shipping lines, the real estate holdings, the offshore trusts worth billions—must pass through the direct bloodline of the Moretti family," Vincent said. "When my brother died four years ago without heirs, I was the sole living successor. If I die without a recognized heir, the entire fortune and the leadership revert automatically to Dante’s bloodline."

The horrifying puzzle pieces clicked together with brutal clarity.

"He doesn't want to kill Maya," I whispered, horrified. "He wants to control her."

"If he has legal custody of my only legitimate child when I die," Vincent confirmed, his eyes burning into mine, "Dante becomes the regent of the entire Moretti empire. He wouldn't kill her until she reached legal age. He would lock her in a golden cage, use her name to rule the underworld, and discard her the moment she signed the inheritance away."

A cold rage, deeper and darker than anything I had ever felt, settled over my soul.

"Get up, Vincent," I told him quietly.

He stared at me. "What?"

May you like

"Get up. We are going to war."
