Chapter 8 - THE COUNTDOWN

The betrayal hung in the dusty, red-lit air like a physical weight.

Marco. The man who had trained with Alessandro. The man who had stood beside him at his father’s funeral. The man who had sworn a blood oath to the Moretti family.

Alessandro didn’t lower his gun. His face remained a mask of stone, but internally, the realization fractured the last pillars of trust he held for his empire.

“It was you,” Alessandro stated, his voice devoid of anger, echoing only with a chilling certainty. “You let the Romanos into Brooklyn four years ago. You gave them the safe house location. You gave Vincent the tunnel schematics.”

Marco stopped ten feet away, his silenced submachine gun resting casually against his hip. He didn't look guilty. He looked exhausted.

“It’s just business, Alessandro,” Marco said quietly. “Your father built an empire, but you refused to expand. You wanted to keep the blood off the streets. You made us weak. Vincent Romano offered me the New York ports. All I had to do was step out of the way and let his men take you out.”

Isabella whimpered from behind the cabinets, shrinking back into the shadows.

Marco’s eyes flicked toward her, then toward Rosa, who was clutching Lily tight against her chest. He saw the child. He saw the striking resemblance to Elena Moretti.

“I didn't know about the girl until today,” Marco admitted, a slight hesitation in his voice. “Vincent told me Isabella bugged the kid’s toy. I’m sorry it has to end like this, Boss. But Vincent’s men are waiting at the end of the tunnel. There’s no way out. Put the gun down, and I’ll make it quick for you.”

“You think Vincent will honor a deal with a traitor?” Alessandro asked smoothly, buying time, his mind calculating distances, angles, and probabilities.

“Vincent honors power,” Marco replied. “And once you’re gone, I have the power.”

“Marco,” Rosa’s voice suddenly cut through the tension.

Marco flinched slightly. He had known Rosa as the quiet maid who served him espresso in the mornings. He had never heard her speak with such command.

Rosa stepped out from behind the steel cabinet. She didn't have a weapon. She only had the fierce, unyielding posture of a mother protecting her young.

“You drank coffee in my kitchen every morning for four years,” Rosa said, her voice steady and piercing. “You brought Lily a lollipop on her second birthday. You told me she reminded you of your niece.”

Marco swallowed hard, his grip on the submachine gun tightening. “Rosa, step back. This isn't your fight.”

“It became my fight the night I pulled a knife out of his ribs because you were too much of a coward to do it yourself,” Rosa fired back, her eyes blazing with righteous fury.

The accusation hit Marco like a physical blow. For a fraction of a second, the guilt he had suppressed for four years surfaced on his face. He lowered the barrel of his gun by an inch.

That inch was all Alessandro needed.

Alessandro didn't shoot. A gunshot would alert Vincent’s men waiting at the end of the tunnel that the ambush had failed.

Instead, Alessandro threw his heavy pistol directly at Marco’s face.

The heavy steel weapon struck Marco squarely on the bridge of his nose with a sickening crunch. Marco cried out, stumbling backward, his hands instinctively flying to his face.

Alessandro closed the ten-foot gap in a heartbeat.

He moved with brutal, terrifying efficiency. He grabbed the barrel of the submachine gun, wrenching it upward to point at the ceiling, and delivered a devastating knee strike to Marco’s ribs. The crack of bone echoed loudly.

Marco collapsed to the floor, gasping for air, the weapon clattering away.

Alessandro stood over him, his chest heaving. He didn't execute him. He simply kicked the submachine gun out of reach and pulled a zip-tie restraint from the medical supply cart, binding Marco’s hands brutally tight behind his back.

“Bruno,” Alessandro commanded, not looking away from the traitor.

“Boss,” the butler replied, stepping forward with his usual calm demeanor.

“Take his weapon. Watch the tunnel entrance. If anyone comes through, kill them.”

“With pleasure, Boss.”

Alessandro turned back to Rosa. She was shaking, the adrenaline finally crashing through her system, but she had never looked more beautiful to him. He crossed the room and pulled her and Lily into a tight, desperate embrace.

“You saved my life again,” Alessandro murmured against her hair.

“We’re even,” Rosa whispered, burying her face in his chest.

Suddenly, a massive, rhythmic pounding began against the bowed steel doors of the medical wing.

Vincent’s men were using a battering ram. The explosive had weakened the frame, and it was only a matter of minutes before they broke through.

“They’re coming,” Isabella panicked, grabbing her hair. “We have nowhere to go! The tunnel is compromised, and the door is failing!”

Alessandro looked around the ruined medical wing. He looked at Marco, bleeding on the floor. He looked at the heavy steel vault door of the medical supply closet.

Then, he looked at the central oxygen lines running along the ceiling.

A dangerous, brilliant plan formed in his mind.

“Evans,” Alessandro barked. “The main oxygen tanks. If we open the valves and flood this room, what happens if a spark hits the air?”

Dr. Evans’s eyes widened in realization. “It would vaporize the entire room in seconds. A thermobaric explosion. But it would kill us too!”

“Not if we’re inside the reinforced surgical vault,” Alessandro said, pointing to the thick steel door at the back of the room used to store volatile anesthetics and secure medications. It was built to withstand fire and explosions.

“We have two minutes,” Alessandro ordered. “Get in the vault. All of you.”

Rosa grabbed Lily and ran for the vault. Isabella followed, practically diving inside. Dr. Evans and Mr. Bruno hurried in right behind them.

Alessandro grabbed Marco by the collar, dragging the bound traitor across the floor and tossing him roughly into the vault alongside them. He wouldn't let Marco die the easy way; he wanted him to face the families he had betrayed.

Alessandro ran to the wall valves. He cranked the dials on the massive oxygen tanks to the maximum limit. A loud, hissing sound filled the room as pure, highly flammable oxygen began flooding the basement air.

The steel doors to the hallway groaned loudly. The hinges began to snap.

Alessandro sprinted for the vault, diving inside just as the heavy steel doors of the medical wing finally gave way, crashing to the floor with a deafening clang.

He grabbed the heavy handle of the surgical vault and began to pull it shut.

Through the narrowing gap, he saw Vincent Romano step into the dusty, oxygen-filled room, a lit cigar clamped between his teeth, flanked by ten heavily armed men.

Vincent looked around the empty room, confused. He opened his mouth to speak.

Alessandro slammed the vault door shut and threw the locking bolts into place.

Outside, in the main room, Vincent took a breath to yell a command. The glowing cherry of his cigar flared bright red.

The spark met the pure oxygen.
