Chapter 6 - THE MUSIC BOX

The red emergency lights bathed the medical wing in a sinister, bloody glow.

Isabella stood in the doorway, her white silk robe stained with soot from the explosion upstairs. Her hands trembled violently as she aimed the revolver at Rosa, who had thrown her body entirely over the unconscious Lily.

“Don’t move!” Isabella screamed, her voice cracking with hysteria. “Alessandro, drop the gun! Drop it or I swear to God I’ll shoot her!”

Alessandro stood perfectly still. His automatic pistol was still in his hand, aimed squarely at Isabella’s chest. He could kill her before her finger finished pulling the trigger. He knew it. And by the panicked look in her eyes, Isabella knew it too.

“Put the gun down, Isabella,” Alessandro said. His voice was not a shout; it was a lethal, quiet command. “You are out of your depth. This is a war you cannot win.”

“I’m already dead!” Isabella sobbed, tears cutting tracks through the dust on her cheeks. “My father is tearing this house apart upstairs! He doesn’t want me anymore, Alessandro! I failed him. I didn't secure the alliance. If he finds me, he will kill me himself!”

Rosa slowly raised her head, shielding Lily with her arms. She looked at the terrified, broken woman holding them at gunpoint.

“Then why are you threatening us?” Rosa asked, her voice surprisingly steady.

Isabella let out a ragged breath. “Because he wants the child! If I bring the brat to him, he’ll let me live. He’ll let me escape. I just need leverage!”

Alessandro’s grip on his pistol tightened. “I will put a bullet through your heart before you take one step toward my daughter.”

Isabella let out a desperate, manic laugh.

She lowered her left hand, reaching into the pocket of her silk robe. She pulled out a small, intricately carved wooden box.

It was an antique music box, completely out of place in the sterile, high-tech medical wing.

“You think this is about shipping routes, Alessandro?” Isabella cried, holding the box up. “You think my father attacked you four years ago for territory?”

She flipped the lid of the music box open.

A haunting, delicate lullaby began to play, the tiny metallic notes echoing softly over the sound of Lily’s heart monitor and the distant gunfire upstairs.

“This belonged to my older brother, Mateo,” Isabella whispered, her eyes turning hollow. “He was supposed to be the heir to the Romano family. But twenty years ago, your father ordered a hit on a Chicago warehouse. Mateo was inside. He was nineteen years old.”

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed. He remembered the war from his youth, the brutal, senseless violence his father had orchestrated.

“My father never forgave your family,” Isabella sobbed, the gun shaking wildly in her hand. “He sent me here to ruin you. He wanted me to marry you, wait until you trusted me, and then poison you in your sleep. I was supposed to avenge Mateo!”

She looked at Rosa, her expression twisting into a mask of bitter resentment.

“And then I found out about the maid,” Isabella spat. “I found out you had a child. My father realized he didn't just have to kill you. He could take your daughter. He could raise the Moretti heir as a Romano. It was the ultimate revenge.”

“Isabella,” Alessandro said softly, taking one slow, calculated step forward. “Your father used you. He sent you into a suicide mission. He doesn't care about Mateo’s revenge. He cares about power.”

“Shut up!” she screamed.

“Look at you,” Alessandro pushed, his voice dropping into a hypnotic, steady rhythm. “You are standing in my basement, terrified of the man who is supposed to protect you. Hand me the gun. I will ensure you get out of this city alive. I give you my word.”

For a fraction of a second, the gun wavered. Isabella looked at Alessandro, a desperate desire to believe him flashing in her eyes.

That fraction of a second was all the distraction required.

From the shadows behind the door, Mr. Bruno moved with a silent, terrifying efficiency that completely betrayed his elderly appearance.

The butler swung the heavy silver tray he had been carrying since the morning, bringing it down with brutal force onto Isabella’s wrist.

A sharp crack echoed through the room.

Isabella shrieked in pain, dropping the revolver. It clattered harmlessly across the linoleum floor.

Before she could recover, Mr. Bruno swept her legs out from under her, pinning her to the floor with his knee pressed firmly between her shoulder blades. He calmly kicked the gun across the room to Alessandro.

“My apologies, Boss,” Mr. Bruno said smoothly, adjusting his jacket cuffs without releasing the struggling woman. “She was becoming tedious.”

Alessandro didn't smile, but a flash of deep respect passed through his eyes. He kicked the revolver into the corner and turned immediately back to the bed.

Lily’s eyes were fluttering open. The fluids Dr. Evans had pushed were taking effect. Color was slowly returning to her pale cheeks.

“Mama?” Lily whispered, her tiny voice scratchy and weak.

Rosa burst into fresh tears, burying her face in the side of Lily’s neck. “I’m here, mi amor. Mama is right here.”

Alessandro walked to the edge of the bed. He looked down at the little girl, his heart expanding in a way he had never thought possible. He reached out, his large, rough hand gently stroking Lily’s dark curls.

Lily looked up at him. She didn't shrink away. She recognized the man who had knelt on the marble floor for her earlier.

“Daddy?” Lily asked softly.

Alessandro felt his breath catch. A single tear escaped his stoic facade, tracing a line down his jaw.

“Yes, piccola mia,” Alessandro whispered fiercely. “I am your father.”

Suddenly, the security monitor on the wall behind them flared to life.

The screen, linked to the estate’s internal camera system, showed the hallway directly outside the medical wing.

Standing there, flanked by four heavily armed men, was Vincent Romano. He was holding a large, military-grade explosive charge.

Isabella, pinned to the floor, looked up at the monitor and let out a blood-curdling scream of pure terror.

“You’re too late, Alessandro,” Vincent Romano’s voice crackled over the intercom, his face staring dead into the security camera. “If you don't open this door in sixty seconds, I’m bringing the ceiling down on all of you.”
