Chapter 6 - The Tiny Accusation

Julian slowly rose to his feet, holding Lily high against his chest, supporting her small legs with one massive arm while his other hand shielded the back of her head.
He turned around slowly to face the pool.
The entire terrace was gripped by an unearthly hush, broken only by Eleanor’s frantic splashing and pathetic wails as she finally managed to dog-paddle toward the pool’s perimeter wall, clinging to the stone coping with her broken, bleeding nails.
"Julian, you animal!" Eleanor coughed out water, glaring up at him with pure hatred through her plastered hair. "I will disinherit you! I will strip you of every asset! You struck your own mother for an accident! She slipped! I barely brushed her!"
Lily heard the voice.
The three-year-old child, still trembling against her father’s shoulder, slowly lifted her head. Her face was pale, her lips tinged with blue from the cold water, but her eyes—usually so innocent, so bright—hardened with an expression no child should ever possess.
Slowly, deliberately, Lily uncurled her tiny right arm from Julian’s collar.
She extended her small, trembling index finger. She pointed it straight down at the soaked, sputtering woman clinging to the pool tiles below.
The crowd leaned in, mesmerized and horrified.
Lily looked into her father’s dark, stormy eyes, her voice clear, fragile, and carrying across the dead-silent estate.
"Daddy..." Lily said, her little chin quivering. "Grandma didn't push me 'cause of the berries."
Julian went entirely still. "What did you say, sweetheart?"
"She pushes me all the time," Lily wept, the tears mixing with the chlorinated pool water on her cheeks. "When you go to work... she pinches me. She locks me in the dark wine cellar. She said if I told you... she would throw me in the deep water so I would never come back."

The revelation detonated across the garden like a nuclear warhead.
