Chapter 1 - The Blood-Red Stain on Haute Couture

The shatter of fine crystal against the Italian travertine was the first warning sign, but nobody was looking at the glass. They were looking at the water.

Within three seconds, a three-million-dollar birthday gala at the Vanderbilt-esque cliffside estate in the Hollywood Hills went from orchestral opulence to cold-blooded slaughter.

Eleanor Vance stood beside the sprawling infinity pool that hung over the glittering sprawl of Los Angeles like a guillotine blade. At seventy-two, she was an empire personified. Her hair was spun platinum, held in place by diamond pins, and her body was wrapped in a custom, one-of-a-kind fifty-thousand-dollar Chanel silk gown—pure, virgin ivory. In her claw-like hand, manicured to sharp perfection, she held a crystal flute of vintage Dom Pérignon.

Down by her feet stood three-year-old Lily. Lily was a wisp of a child, soft-eyed, with chestnut curls bouncing against her cheeks, wearing a frilly white birthday dress that her father had bought for her special day. In her tiny, sticky hands, she held a small glass bowl filled with wild raspberries.

"Grandma..." Lily’s voice was barely a murmur, a trembling whisper of a child seeking approval from a monster. "Look... for you."

Lily tripped. It was a toddler’s simple, innocent stumble over the uneven edge of the stone patio.

The bowl flew. The raspberries hit Eleanor’s ivory gown like a spray of arterial blood. Thick, dark, crimson juice streaked across the silk, soaking deep into the delicate threads, ruining the irreplaceable fabric across her stomach and hip.

The entire terrace went dead silent. The string quartet’s violins squeaked and abruptly died. The chattering billionaires, hedge fund titans, and European nobility held their breath. Everyone knew Eleanor Vance’s vanity was legendary; her temper was lethal.

Eleanor looked down. Her pupils contracted into black pinpricks. The mask of high-society elegance cracked, replaced by a grotesque, reptilian fury that contorted her surgically tightened features. Her chest heaved. Her teeth bared behind blood-red lipstick.

"You filthy, clumsy little parasite!" Eleanor’s voice was not a whisper; it was a venomous shriek that pierced the night air.

Lily recoiled, terror instantly pooling in her wide brown eyes. "I-I'm sorry, Grandma—"

Eleanor didn’t wait. She didn’t scold. She didn’t hesitate for a fraction of a second. With both hands, knuckles whitening with vicious force, the matriarch shoved her three-year-old granddaughter violently backward with the full weight of her body.

Lily’s tiny body went airborne. Her high-pitched, curdling scream was cut short as she cleared the stone coping and plummeted eight feet down into the freezing, twelve-foot-deep chlorinated abyss.

*SPLASH!*

The sound was like a gunshot. The surface of the pool exploded into white foam, instantly swallowing the child whole. The white dress flared for a second like a drowning jellyfish, and then Lily vanished into the dark, churning depths, coughing water, her tiny hands flailing helplessly beneath the surface.
