Chapter 29 - The Wolf and the Lamb

"Lily!" Helena’s voice shrieked through the rain-soaked darkness, warped by madness and physical pain. "Come to your mother, you little rat! I have your leash! Daniel promised me I get to snap your neck myself!"

Inside the lodge, Arthur looked at Rachel, his eyes burning with frantic terror. "Helena survived the fall? How is that humanly possible?!"

"The storm surge must have swept her onto the sand spit near the light," Rachel said, her voice dropping into a lethal, predatory register. "Daniel had extraction teams in the area. She’s out of her mind on adrenaline and painkillers."

On the terminal desk, the progress bar flashed: *UPLINK PROGRESS: 96%... 45 SECONDS REMAINING.*

"Arthur," Rachel whispered, reloading her rifle. "When that terminal hits one hundred percent, the entire world will know what they did. Montgomery won't have anywhere on this planet to hide. But Daniel knows that. He’s going to level this entire house with heavy munitions to destroy the physical hard drive."

"What do we do?" Arthur asked, clutching his pistol with white-knuckled desperation.

"You stay with Lily at the terminal," Rachel commanded. "I’m going out there. I’m finishing Daniel."

"Mama, no!" Lily grabbed Rachel’s tactical vest, tears welling in her eyes. "He has an army! He has guns!"

Rachel knelt down and kissed Lily’s forehead with fierce, unyielding devotion. "Lily, remember what I told you. You are a Vance. You carry the blood of lions. You survived their darkness. Now watch me bring the dawn."

Rachel rose and slipped into the shadows of the hallway, heading toward the rear exit to flank the driveway.

Outside, the heavy halogen beams suddenly swept away from the front door, focusing on the large bay windows of the dining room.

*CRASH!*

A tear-gas canister smashed through the window, spewing thick, choking chemical smoke into the room. Arthur coughed violently, his eyes burning as he dragged Lily backward toward the fireplace.

Through the shattered window frame, stepping over the broken glass with chilling, deliberate steps, came Helena.

Her burned face was twisted into a hideous rictus of hatred. The carbon-fiber brace on her right arm whirred with hydraulic power, and her left hand whipped the heavy silver chain against the wooden floorboards with a sharp, terrifying *CRACK*.

"Grandpa’s little princess," Helena sneered, her voice raspy from smoke and rage. "Did you miss your collar, Lily? Did you miss sleeping on the cold concrete while Daniel and I drank vintage champagne upstairs?"

Arthur stepped forward, raising his Glock with both hands, aiming directly at Helena’s chest. "Step back, you sick, psychotic bitch! I took you off the streets of Milan! I gave you everything!"

"You gave me scraps, Arthur!" Helena screamed, lunging forward with unnatural, drugged speed.

Before Arthur could pull the trigger, Helena’s carbon-fiber arm snapped out like an iron piston. The heavy metal brace struck Arthur’s wrist with brutal force, shattering the bones and sending the pistol flying across the room. Her follow-through backhand caught Arthur across the jaw, sending the seventy-year-old patriarch crashing heavily against the stone hearth, where he lay motionless, blood pooling beneath his silver hair.

"Grandpa!" Lily screamed, rushing toward Arthur’s side.

Helena grabbed Lily by the collar of her sweater, lifting the nine-year-old child off her feet with one hand and slamming her back against the terminal desk.

The silver chain wrapped around Lily’s bruised throat, tightening instantly, cutting off her air.

"Bark for me," Helena hissed into Lily’s face, her breath smelling of sour chemicals and madness. Her good eye bulged with psychotic euphoria. "Bark like the pathetic little dog you are, Lily! Bark, and maybe I’ll make your death quick! Bark!"

Lily clawed at the heavy links of the chain, her vision blurring, black spots dancing across her eyes. She saw Arthur lying unconscious on the floor. She saw the terminal screen behind Helena’s head:

*UPLINK PROGRESS: 99%... 5 SECONDS REMAINING.*

For three months, Lily had bowed her head. For three months, she had crawled on her knees, swallowed her tears, and endured the humiliation of being treated like an animal just to stay alive.

She was not that little girl anymore.

Her mother was alive. Her grandfather had bled for her. And she was a Vance.

Instead of barking, Lily looked directly into Helena’s burned, ruined eye with a terrifying, icy glare.

"I am not a dog," Lily choked out through the crushing steel links. "I am my mother’s daughter."

With all the strength remaining in her tiny frame, Lily reached into her fleece pocket. She pulled out the heavy tactical combat knife Rachel had pressed into her jacket before leaving the room.

Lily did not hesitate. Driven by pure, ancestral survival, she drove the four-inch serrated steel blade straight down into Helena’s exposed, unarmored thigh.

Helena shrieked in absolute agony, her grip loosening on the chain as blood gushed from the severed femoral artery. She stumbled backward, howling, clutching her leg.

Behind her, the terminal emitted a sharp, triumphant chime that echoed through the room:
