Chapter 28 - The Ballistic Blackout

The power to the lodge died instantly.

The low hum of the generator in the basement abruptly ceased as an electromagnetic pulse grenade detonated outside, frying the circuits and plunging the entire estate into absolute, suffocating darkness.

The only illumination came from the dying amber embers in the stone fireplace and the faint green phosphorescence of the emergency terminal screen, which was still running on its internal, shielded battery.

"Arthur, get behind the stone island in the kitchen with Lily," Rachel ordered, snapping down her night-vision goggles. The world turned into sharp, eerie shades of luminescent green. "Do not move from that spot. If anyone steps into this room wearing black gear who isn't me... empty this magazine into them."

Rachel pressed a compact Glock 19 into Arthur’s hands. The old man nodded grimly, cocking the slide, and pulled Lily down behind the heavy, bullet-resistant granite counter.

Above them, the roof groaned. The unmistakable sound of combat boots landing on the cedar shingles echoed through the ceiling.

Then came the breach.

The heavy oak front doors exploded inward in a shower of splintered wood and iron hinges as a high-grade breaching charge blew them off their frame. Stun grenades bounced into the great room, detonating with deafening flashes of white light and concussive bangs designed to rupture eardrums and blind occupants.

Arthur covered Lily’s ears, pressing her face down against the floorboards.

Through the smoke, four heavily armored mercenaries entered in a stack formation, their assault rifles raised, thermal optics scanning the room. They wore black tactical gear bearing the insignia of a stylized iron rose—the elite wet-work unit of the Montgomery family.

"Clear left!" the lead operative barked.

He never cleared right.

From the shadows beside the stone hearth, Rachel emerged like a phantom. Her combat blade flashed in the dim light, sliding beneath the first mercenary’s Kevlar collar, severing his carotid artery before he could draw breath.

Before the body hit the floor, Rachel seized his falling assault rifle, using his corpse as a ballistic shield against the second operative’s gunfire. Bullets tore into the dead man’s armor as Rachel fired back with her sidearm, planting two double-taps through the second mercenary’s optic visor.

The remaining two mercenaries swung their weapons toward her, but a deafening *BANG-BANG-BANG* echoed from the kitchen island.

Arthur Vance, his hands shaking but his aim true, fired three rounds from the Glock. One round struck the third mercenary in the thigh, causing him to stagger backward. Rachel closed the distance in a heartbeat, sweeping his legs out from under him and driving the butt of her rifle into his throat.

The fourth mercenary fired wildly, spraying the kitchen cabinets above Arthur and Lily’s heads. Splinters of wood and shattered porcelain rained down on the little girl.

Rachel dropped her empty weapon, drew her tactical combat knife, and tackled the final operative onto the heavy oak dining table. The massive wooden table splintered in two under their combined weight. They rolled across the floor in a deadly grapple, the mercenary trying to force the barrel of his sidearm under Rachel’s chin.

Rachel grabbed his wrist, twisting it outward with brutal leverage, then drove her thumb into his right eye socket. The mercenary shrieked in agony, dropping the gun. Rachel rolled on top of him, delivering three crushing hammer-fists to his temple until his body went completely limp.

Rachel knelt over the dead men, her chest heaving, blood dripping from a cut above her eyebrow.

Silence returned to the room, punctuated only by the howling wind outside and the rhythmic, electronic clicking of the terminal.

"Rachel!" Arthur hissed from the kitchen. "Are you hit?!"

"I’m clear," Rachel breathed, grabbing an enemy rifle and fresh magazines from the floor. "Check Lily."

"I’m okay, Mama," Lily’s small voice trembled from beneath the island. "I’m not hurt."

Suddenly, the heavy crunch of gravel outside announced a vehicle approaching.

Through the shattered front doorway, high-powered halogen floodlights bathed the room in blinding, clinical white light. The engine of a heavy, armored luxury SUV idled outside in the rain.

A voice, amplified through a megaphone, echoed into the ruined living room—a voice that made Lily’s blood turn to ice.

"Rachel! Arthur! Come out to play!" Daniel Vance’s voice purred with sadistic, theatrical delight. "You put on a wonderful show with that video broadcast, but the network was blocked by our federal backdoors! The board meeting is in ten minutes. And look who I brought to help me collect our little dog."

The passenger door of the armored SUV opened.

Stepping into the glare of the headlights was a figure wrapped in a heavy trench coat. Her right arm was secured in a high-tech, carbon-fiber prosthetic brace, and half of her beautiful, aristocratic face was blackened and raw from the flash-burn of the lighthouse explosion.

Helena was alive. And in her good hand, she held an antique, heavy silver dog chain.
