Chapter 6 - Basement 417

The ambulance took Eleanor's nurse to the hospital. Eleanor refused to leave with her. "I'm not going anywhere until somebody listens."

A police detective named Lena Ortiz arrived before midnight, listened to the story, and insisted on photographing the torn note. She was smaller than the guards and twice as difficult to interrupt.

"Nobody enters the basement without an officer," she said.

Adrian nodded. I didn't. The anonymous message had told me to leave before midnight, which meant somebody cared exactly when that archive was opened.

"Detective," I said, "you need to know the building's old plans."

Ortiz came with us, bringing a patrol officer and a flashlight. A locked metal door stood behind stacked banquet chairs. The label read MECHANICAL STORAGE. Somebody had painted over the old brass handle.

My key turned in a concealed slot below the plate.

"Your father built that?" Ortiz asked.

"He fixed things people wanted to hide."

Inside were narrow corridors lined with dead servers. Water damage climbed the walls. Numbered steel cabinets stood in rows, most empty, until we reached 417.

I opened it.

A single envelope waited inside, addressed in my father's handwriting: MAYA—ONLY IF YOU HAVE TO.

There was also a flash drive and a small cassette recorder. Adrian turned away as I unfolded the letter.

My girl, it began, if you're reading this, I failed to come home. Don't mistake silence for safety. I stayed quiet too long because they made me believe it would protect you and Noah.

I could barely see the ink.

The recorder held my father's voice, tired and furious.

"March fourteenth. Elliot Price and Vanessa Sterling approved the Willowbrook transfers. Adrian doesn't know. Eleanor has copies, but they're going to discredit her. The money isn't just missing. It's being used to buy control of the foundation's voting trust."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"One more thing," Dad's voice said. "If something happens to me, find the witness listed as LARK. She can prove who ordered the transfer."

The tape clicked off. Behind us, the basement lights flickered.

Ortiz raised her radio. Static answered.

Then the metal door at the end of the corridor slammed shut. Water began hissing from the ceiling sprinklers, and smoke curled under the cabinets.
