Chapter 16 - The Recording

Elliot's voice sounded like a man ordering lunch. That frightened me more than shouting would have.
"Send it to the police," I said.
"The police can't give you your father back."
"Neither can you."
He ended the call.
Ortiz arranged a formal interview for Charles. He came with counsel and admitted that he had lied by omission. He also surrendered a backup drive from his private office. He had kept it for years, unable to throw away the evidence and too ashamed to expose himself.
The drive contained surveillance from the warehouse. There was no audio. We watched Dad walk into frame beside Charles, carrying a folder. Elliot arrived minutes later. Charles left. Elliot and Dad argued. At 10:18, Heller appeared near the loading gate control.
My stomach tightened.
Heller stepped behind the panel. The gate dropped seconds later. Dad disappeared beneath it. Elliot ran toward the exit instead of calling for help.
I reached for the pause button. My hand wouldn't obey me.
Adrian did it for me.
"I'm sorry," he said.
"I don't need sorry right now."
"What do you need?"
I watched my father's last ordinary movement on the frozen screen. He had adjusted the sleeve of his work shirt. He always did that when he was nervous.
"I need the whole truth," I said.
The video didn't prove Charles killed Dad. It did establish why the accident finding deserved to be reopened. Ortiz delivered it to the prosecutor handling the financial crimes.
Ruth identified Heller on the footage. She also recognized a briefcase Elliot carried out of the warehouse: the company's paper authorization files.
That evening the court continued the bank freeze and ordered the foundation to preserve its records. Vanessa held a press conference claiming a family vendetta had forced her into hiding.
Before the cameras left, a reporter asked whether she had threatened a waitress. Vanessa answered with a practiced smile.
"I was frightened that night. Things happened quickly."

Then she glanced at the reporter's phone, and the smile disappeared.
An unedited recording of the gala had just been posted from her own verified account.
