Chapter 9 - The Final Ledger

The door exploded inward, splintering wood and shearing the deadbolt clean out of the frame.

Raymond spun around so fast he nearly dropped the laptop, his eyes bulging as he stared down the barrel of the dark, unblinking reality standing in his doorway.

“Rebecca?!” Raymond choked out, his face turning the color of wet chalk.

I stepped into the trailer, my boots clicking rhythmically against the linoleum floor. I didn't yell. I didn't run. I moved with the terrifying, absolute calm of a senior military officer entering a hostile zone.

“Step away from the desk, Raymond,” I said, my voice dropping into a register that made the air in the room freeze.

Ethan lifted his head, his eyes wide with shock and relief. “Becca... how did you—?”

“Save your breath, little brother,” I kept my eyes locked on my father, who was backing up against the wall behind the desk like a trapped animal.

Raymond’s hands trembled as he hovered over the laptop keyboard, his fingers clutching the edge of the screen. “Don't come any closer, Rebecca! One keystroke, and your brother’s life is public property!”

“Go ahead,” I said, taking another slow step forward, my hand resting casually over my holstered sidearm. “Press the enter key, Dad.”

Raymond blinked, thrown entirely off balance by my lack of panic. “What? Are you insane? Do you care nothing about his career?”

“I care deeply about my brother,” I said smoothly. “Which is why I know for an absolute fact that Ethan never took a municipal kickback in his life.”

Raymond sneered. “It’s right here in the file! The bank records, the settlement signatures—”

“Falsified,” a calm, steady voice interrupted from the doorway behind me.

Raymond and Ethan both gasped as Captain Jenna Wallace stepped into the trailer, flanked by two local troopers from the Iowa State Patrol and a military intelligence specialist holding an active signal-interception rig.

“Mr. Raymond Hartwell,” Jenna said, flashing a federal-state joint warrant under the light of the desk lamp. “You are under arrest for extortion, interstate wire fraud, possession of forged legal documents, and unlawful restraint of a citizen.”

Raymond stared at the badges, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly. “This... this is absurd! I am Raymond Hartwell! I built this city!”

“You built an empire on intimidation, Dad,” I said, reaching across the desk and gently pulling the manila folder out of his trembling, nerveless fingers. I flipped it open, scanning the paper for half a second before tossing it onto the keyboard. “Unfortunately for you, federal investigators have been tracking the dark-web procurement of forged municipal documents in this county for three months. Your digital footprint when you purchased these fake files from your private investigator went straight to our intelligence server forty minutes ago.”

The color completely drained from Raymond’s face. The great builder, the untouchable patriarch of Cedar Rapids, shrank into a small, pathetic old man standing in a rusted trailer.

The troopers moved in instantly, clicking cold steel cuffs around his wrists.

“You’re ruining me...” Raymond whispered, his voice cracking as they hauled him toward the broken door. “After everything I gave you... you’re destroying your own father.”

May you like

“No, Raymond,” I said, turning my back on him as I knelt beside Ethan to slice through the plastic zip-ties with my pocketknife. “You destroyed yourself the moment you thought fear was stronger than family.”
