Chapter 18 - The Viper in the Ranks

The medical tent near the range perimeter smelled of burn ointment and antiseptic. A combat medic finished wrapping my right forearm in sterile bandages, shaking his head at the sheer luck that had kept the electrical arc from stopping my heart.

Sergeant Major Ortiz walked into the tent, his face dark and murderous. He held a crushed digital relay chip wrapped in an evidence bag.

"We found this spliced directly into Gun Three’s tactical satellite receiver," Ortiz said, keeping his voice low so the medics wouldn't hear. "It wasn't installed in the factory, Colonel. It was physically wired into the terminal right here in our maintenance bay within the last forty-eight hours."

I stood up, testing the grip of my right hand. Pain shot up to my shoulder, but the fingers responded. "Who had access to the Paladin fire-control systems yesterday, Sergeant Major?"

"Only three technicians," Ortiz replied. "And one officer who signed off on the pre-fire diagnostics."

"Name him."

"Captain Thomas Vance-Miller," Ortiz spat, disgust dripping from his tongue. "Your second cousin. Donald Vance’s nephew. He transferred into our logistics and ordnance division two months ago on personal orders from Assistant Undersecretary Albright."

I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second, the bitter taste of family betrayal returning with sickening familiar weight. Donald hadn't just planted shell companies; he had placed his own blood inside my formation to orchestrate an execution.

Ten minutes later, I walked into the brigade tactical operations center. Captain Thomas Vance-Miller was sitting at a computer terminal in the rear corner, his fingers tapping rapidly across the keyboard as he prepared an emergency requisition report.

I stopped directly in front of his desk. The room grew dead silent as the command staff realized the brigade commander was standing over the junior officer.

"Captain," I said, my voice cold as absolute zero.

Thomas looked up, trying to force an easy smile, but his eyes betrayed a wild, cornered panic. "Colonel Vance. Sir. We heard about the malfunction on Range 30. Thank God you stopped it—"

Before he could finish the sentence, I reached down with my left hand, seized him by the tactical collar of his uniform, and lifted him out of his chair, slamming him against the reinforced steel wall of the briefing room.

The impact rattled the display monitors. "Sir!" Frank Miller shouted in surprise, stepping forward.

"Stay back, Frank," I growled, never breaking eye contact with Thomas.

Thomas choked, his hands clawing at my forearm. "Marcus! What are you doing? I’m your cousin!"

"You're a traitor," I whispered into his ear, tightening my grip until his boots dangled two inches above the floor. "You spliced a remote receiver into Gun Three. You gave Donald’s mercenaries the trigger to murder forty American soldiers just to create an accident that would relieve me of command and destroy the investigation."

Thomas’s face turned purple. "You... you don't have proof... you can't prove..."

Sergeant Major Ortiz slammed the evidence bag with the severed relay chip onto the desk in front of Thomas’s bulging eyes.

"We pulled your biometric prints off the solder casing, Captain," Ortiz said smoothly. "And we already pulled your personal encrypted phone from your locker. You received five hundred thousand dollars in cryptocurrency from a Sofia shell account at 0400 this morning."

Thomas’s defiance evaporated in an instant. The arrogance of the Vance name vanished from his features, leaving only the trembling terror of a young man who realized he was facing a military firing squad for treason.

"It wasn't Donald’s idea!" Thomas gasped, tears of terror leaking down his cheeks. "Donald is just the money man now! He sold the whole network to Corinth! They’re meeting tonight to transfer the master keys!"

I leaned in closer, my voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "Where, Thomas? Where is Donald meeting them?"

"The Blackwood Airfield," Thomas sobbed. "A private strip in the Missouri Ozarks. Donald is flying out on a private jet to South America at midnight. Please... Marcus... don't let them execute me!"

I released him. Thomas collapsed onto the floor in a heap, weeping into his trembling hands.

I turned to Frank Miller and General Kane, who had just stepped into the doorway. "Arrest this man under Article 94 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice for mutiny and sedition."

I pulled my cap down over my brow. "And prep the Vanguard’s air-assault team. We're going to Missouri."
