Chapter 2: The Name on the Deed

Part 2 👇
Daniel didn't answer right away.
He straightened his jacket, looked at Vanessa with the kind of calm that made people nervous, and said simply, "Because this is her restaurant."
The table went silent.
One of Vanessa's friends set her wine glass down.
Another stopped smiling.
Vanessa herself didn't move for a full three seconds.
"I'm sorry?" she finally said.
"Emily Carter owns this restaurant," Daniel said.
"She has since the day it opened.
I manage the dining room.
She signs my paycheck."
Vanessa's face went through four expressions in about two seconds — confusion, doubt, disbelief, and then something that looked very close to fear.
"That's not possible," she said.
"She's wearing an apron."
"She wears it when she works the floor," Daniel said.
"Which she does because she built this place and she likes to know how it runs."
Vanessa looked at me.
I looked back at her and said nothing.
"You never told me," she said.
Her voice had gone very quiet.
"You never asked," I said.
"You assumed."
She looked down at the napkin still lying on the floor.
Nobody had touched it.
Then her phone buzzed on the table and she glanced at the screen — and something shifted in her expression.
Not embarrassment this time.
Something harder.
Something that told me this evening was far from over.
She looked up at me slowly and said, "I think we need to talk.
Privately."

What did Vanessa see on that phone?
And why did she suddenly want to speak to Emily alone?
The full story goes somewhere nobody at that table expected.
