Chapter 10 - Unbroken

Later that evening, after the guests had departed, Grandma Rose and I walked slowly through the quiet gardens behind the courtyard. The evening air was cool, carrying the sweet scent of blooming jasmine.

"You built a fine life here, Emily," Rose said softly, leaning gently on my arm.

"I couldn't have done it without you, Grandma," I replied, covering her hand with mine. "If you hadn't stood up that day at the wedding, I would still be sitting at that kitchen door table, believing I was worthless."

Rose stopped, turning to face me under the soft glow of the garden lanterns.

"You were never worthless, my sweet girl," Rose said, her voice rich with maternal pride. "You were just surrounded by people who were blind to your light. Sometimes, you have to let the old structure burn down so the real foundation can show."

My phone vibrated in my purse. I pulled it out and saw a text message from an unknown number.

I opened it. It was from Victoria:

I hated you for a long time. But sitting in this empty apartment today, I realized Grandma was right. I am sorry for what I did to your business. I don't expect you to forgive me, but I am paying back the last installment to your account today.

Attached was a bank transfer confirmation receipt for the remaining balance of the stolen funds.

I stared at the screen for a moment, feeling a long-standing weight lift entirely from my shoulders. I didn't text back, but I didn't feel anger anymore either. The debt was settled—both financial and emotional.

I tucked my phone away, took my grandmother's arm, and walked together toward the bright lights of my office building.

The past was behind me, the shadows were gone, and for the first time in my life, I was completely, unshakeably free.
