Chapter 19 - HOMECOMING

We returned to the mansion in autumn.

The hidden staircase had been sealed. The room beneath filled and cemented over. New staff hired. New security installed. The house no longer felt like a prison. It felt like a home.

Lily explored every room, running freely, laughing, shouting her discoveries. She was finally allowed to be a child. No fear. No secrets. No Nora watching from doorways.

On her seventh birthday—the real one, the one we had missed for so long—we gathered in the garden. Friends. Family. Happiness.

Lily stood before us in a white dress, a silver locket around her neck containing portraits of her mother and me. She looked radiant.

“I have something to say,” she announced, standing tall.

We fell silent.

“Thank you,” she said simply. “For finding us. For loving us. And Daddy?”

“Yes, my love?”

She grinned, that bold, beautiful smile that belonged equally to both her parents.

“Thank you for drinking the tea.”

Everyone laughed. I knelt and lifted her high into my arms.

“I will never forget that night,” I told her. “You were braver than anyone I have ever known. You saved three lives that night. Mine. Your mother’s. And your own.”

Lily hugged my neck tight. “We are together now. That is all that matters.”
