Chapter 10 - The Warmth of Home

Spring arrived early the following year, painting the neighborhood in vibrant shades of green and blooming cherry blossoms.

The legal fallout for Patricia Hayes was entirely behind us. Her grand estate had been sold off to cover mounting legal fees and restitution fines, and she had quietly relocated to a small, secluded apartment across the state—completely forgotten by the high-society circles she had once fought so desperately to control.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, Mia was sitting at the kitchen table with a massive box of crayons and construction paper, drawing a picture of our family.

I walked over with a plate of sliced apples and leaned over her shoulder to inspect her artwork.

There was Daddy, tall and smiling with stick-figure arms. There was me, standing right beside him with a big heart drawn over my chest. And right in the middle, holding both our hands, was a little girl in a bright yellow cardigan, smiling under a brilliant blue sky.

No concrete pillars. No cold shadows. Just open space and endless light.

"What do you think, Mommy?" Mia asked proudly, holding up the drawing for my inspection.

I smiled, fighting back a sudden rush of happy tears, and kissed the top of her head.

"It's the most beautiful picture I've ever seen, sweet girl," I whispered, pulling her close into a warm, unbreakable embrace. "It's perfect."

We had walked through the dark, cold corners of family cruelty, armed with nothing more than calm resolve and the unyielding truth. But we had made it out into the sunlight. And this time, no one would ever tell us not to move again.
