Chapter 5: The Secret My Father Left Behind

Claire arrived at my house before sunrise.

She didn’t knock.

She never did when she knew something was wrong.

She walked in carrying a thick folder and placed it on my kitchen table.

"We need to talk.""

I looked at the folder.

"About my father?""

She nodded.

I sat down.

For years, I believed my father died because of a heart attack.

That was the story everyone told me.

The doctors.

The lawyers.

Even Daniel.

But now, for the first time, I wondered if I had been mourning a lie.

Claire opened the folder.

"Your father was investigating missing funds before he died.""

I stared at her.

"Missing funds?""

"From the company.""

I shook my head.

"Richard.""

She nodded.

"Richard Hale.""

The name felt poisonous.

"My father trusted him.""

"He did.""

Claire looked at the papers.

"Too much.""

She showed me copies of old financial records.

Numbers.

Transfers.

Accounts I had never seen.

"Richard was moving money through several shell companies.""

I looked closer.

"And Daniel?""

Claire hesitated.

"Daniel was involved.""

The room became painfully quiet.

"No.""

I said it before I even knew why.

Because some part of me still wanted one thing to remain untouched.

The memory of the man I married.

Claire didn't soften the truth.

"Daniel was young. Your father gave him a chance. He believed Daniel could become a better man than Richard.""

I looked away.

"But he wasn't.""

"No.""

Claire closed the folder.

"Before your father died, he changed the trust.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"Because he discovered Daniel had signed documents without authorization.""

My heart sank.

"What documents?""

"Documents transferring partial control of company assets.""

I stood.

"Daniel tried to steal from me?""

Claire didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

I walked to the window.

Outside, the garden was exactly how I left it.

The same flowers.

The same stone path.

The same place where Daniel proposed.

I remembered that day.

He had knelt beside the roses and said:

"I promise I'll protect you.""

I almost laughed at the memory.

Because the person I needed protection from had been him.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I watched it vibrate.

Then I answered.

"What?""

His voice sounded broken.

"Mara, I need to see you.""

"No.""

"Please.""

That word surprised me.

Daniel Reed did not beg.

Not ever.

"What happened?""

A pause.

"Vanessa disappeared.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"She took documents from my office.""

I leaned against the table.

"Why would she do that?""

His answer was barely a whisper.

"Because she was never planning to stay with me.""

I closed my eyes.

Part of me wanted to feel satisfaction.

But all I felt was exhaustion.

"Where are you?""

"At the office.""

"I'll be there.""

Claire looked at me.

"Are you sure?""

"No.""

I picked up my coat.

"But I need answers.""

When I arrived at Daniel’s office, it looked nothing like the place I remembered.

The expensive furniture was still there.

The glass walls.

The awards.

The things people used to measure success.

But the confidence was gone.

Daniel stood beside his desk.

A man surrounded by everything he owned and realizing none of it was real.

"She took the files.""

"What files?""

"The files about your father.""

I froze.

"Why would Vanessa want those?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Because she knows what Richard did.""

I stared.

"You knew?""

His face tightened.

"I knew pieces.""

"Pieces?""

"I knew Richard was involved in something illegal. I didn't know the full story.""

I stepped closer.

"You knew my father was investigating him.""

"Yes.""

"And you said nothing.""

Daniel looked ashamed.

"I was afraid.""

The honesty almost shocked me.

"You were afraid of Richard?""

He nodded.

"He threatened me.""

"With what?""

Daniel looked at the floor.

"With exposing my role.""

The room spun slightly.

"You helped him.""

"I was twenty-six.""

"You were my husband.""

"I know.""

His voice cracked.

"I know.""

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then the office door opened.

Both of us turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Gray hair.

Cold eyes.

Richard Hale.

He smiled.

Not warmly.

Like someone who had been waiting for this moment.

"Mara.""

My blood went cold.

"I was hoping we could finally have this conversation.""

Daniel stepped in front of me.

Richard laughed.

"Still pretending to be the hero, Daniel?""

And then he placed a folder on the desk.

A folder with my father’s signature on the front.

Richard looked at me.

"Your father left you one final message.""

I stared at the folder.

"What message?""

May you like

Richard smiled.

"The truth about who really caused his death.""
