Chapter 9 - The Foundation of True Wealth

By late November, the first flakes of winter snow had begun to dust the rooftops of Chicago, signaling the transition into the holiday season.
The newly established Sterling-Harrison Educational Trust—funded entirely through restructured assets and private endowments—officially opened its application portal for underprivileged students working their way through university while maintaining part-time employment.
In its very first week, over five hundred applications flooded in from across the state.
Inside her newly decorated, cozy campus apartment, Emily sat at her desk reviewing the first batch of candidate essays. Each story was a reflection of resilience, hard work, and unyielding determination—qualities she knew intimately.
Her phone buzzed on the desk. It was a text message from Ethan:
“Dinner at Grandma’s tonight at 7:00 PM. Roast beef, apple pie, and absolutely no high-society drama allowed.”
Emily smiled, typing back a quick reply:
“I’ll bring the pie crusts. See you at seven.”
She locked her laptop, stood up, and walked over to the window, watching the soft white snow settle gently over the bustling Chicago streets below.
She thought back to the moment in the grand ballroom—the shattered crystal, the spilled champagne, the stinging slap across her face, and the cold, arrogant voice telling her to clean up a mess she hadn't made. It felt like a lifetime ago, a distant nightmare from another world.

She hadn't fought back with anger. She hadn't screamed or thrown punches. She had simply stayed true to who she was, trusting that the people who truly loved her would see the truth when the masks finally fell away.
And they had.
