Chapter 1

The afternoon sun poured over the exclusive private polo club in Connecticut, bathing the sprawling estate in brilliant, bright colors. It was a picture-perfect setting for a high-society donor luncheon, overflowing with wealthy white American adults dressed in expensive formal clothing. On the expansive terrace, marble columns rose majestically toward the clear sky, framing a breathtaking view of the manicured fields. Elaborate floral displays cascaded from the balustrades, their sweet fragrance mixing with the crisp autumn air.
Near the edge of the terrace stood a low viewing platform, separated from the main dining area by a short flight of carpeted steps. Alina Carbone stood there, a vision of composed elegance. At thirty-four, her fair, rosy skin glowed beautifully against her fitted burgundy luncheon dress. Heavy, tasteful jewelry sparkled at her throat, and her high heels clicked softly against the wooden platform. She held the small hand of her three-year-old daughter, Lucy. The little girl, wearing a pale pink party dress and pristine white shoes, looked out at the distant horses with innocent, wide eyes.
"Look at the horses, Mommy," Lucy said, her American accent sweet and bright. "Are they going to run fast today?"
"They will run very fast, my love," Alina replied with a soft smile, her protective grip on her daughter’s hand firm and reassuring. "But we have to stay right here and watch from a safe distance, alright?"
The peaceful moment was abruptly shattered by the arrival of Ramona Carbone. At forty-three, Ramona was a close relative by marriage, but her presence brought a sudden, icy chill to the warm afternoon. She wore a luxurious cream dress that practically screamed wealth, her heavy jewelry catching the sunlight like weapons. Her fair face was locked in an expression of cold, calculating disdain as she approached the mother and daughter.
"Alina," Ramona said smoothly, her voice lacking any genuine warmth. "Enjoying the view while you still can? It is a beautiful estate. Such a shame you never truly fit into it."
Alina’s spine stiffened. She turned slightly, keeping Lucy partially behind her. "We are enjoying the afternoon, Ramona. If you have a problem with my presence here, I suggest you take it up with my husband. Lorenzo invited me."
"Lorenzo is blinded by a pretty face and a young child," Ramona scoffed, her heels stepping dangerously close to the edge of the low viewing platform. "But the rest of the family sees clearly. You are a distraction. A liability. We have a legacy to maintain, Alina, and you are muddying the waters."
"I am his wife," Alina stated firmly, her voice steady despite the rising tension. "And Lucy is his daughter. We are not a distraction. We are his family."

"Family is blood, Alina. You are merely an unfortunate detour," Ramona sneered, her eyes flashing with a sudden, vicious malice.
Before Alina could process the shift in Ramona’s posture, the older woman stepped forward and suddenly shoved Alina violently by the shoulders. The force of the unexpected strike sent Alina and Lucy tumbling backward off the edge of the low viewing platform.
