Chapter 9 - The Last Confrontation

Margaret had served nine years in prison when she requested a hearing for supervised release.
Richard opposed it.
Claire did too.
But Emma, now sixteen, asked to attend.
The hearing was tense.
Margaret looked older.
Her hair was gray.
She stared at Emma.
"I'm sorry."
Emma said nothing.
"I know you don't owe me forgiveness."
"You're right."
Margaret looked down.
"I made terrible choices."
"You tried to hurt me."
"I know."
"You lied about Mom."
"I know."
"You made Dad think she was dangerous."
"I know."
Emma's voice remained calm.
"Why?"
Margaret began crying.
"Because I was afraid of losing everything."
Emma stared at her.
"You already had everything."
Margaret shook her head.
"No."
"You had a son."
"Yes."
"You had a granddaughter."
Margaret closed her eyes.
"I was sick."
Emma stood.
"Maybe."
She looked at her.
"But being hurt doesn't give you permission to hurt someone else."
Margaret nodded.
The hearing ended.
The judge granted limited supervised release.
But Margaret would have no contact with Emma without her consent.
Outside the courthouse, Richard asked:
"Are you okay?"
Emma nodded.
"Yes."
"Do you regret going?"
"No."
"Why?"
Emma smiled.
"Because I wanted the last thing she heard from me to be the truth."
Claire hugged her.
"You don't have to carry this anymore."
Emma looked at her mother.
"I know."
They walked toward the car.
Behind them, Margaret watched.

She was finally alone with the consequences of her choices.
And Emma was finally free of them.
