Three hungry children stood outside a locked ranch gate.
Their father held a baby in his arms.
And the woman on the other side was about to say something that would leave him speechless.
Grant had lost his wife. Now, with two young children beside him and his infant daughter against his chest, he had come to ask for work.
Nothing more.
Beyond the gate stretched a prosperous cattle ranch, with horses, wooden corrals, and a large timber house glowing in the late afternoon sunlight.
Cooper, the young ranch owner with bright green eyes and a long copper-red braid, watched the exhausted family approach.
Grant gathered his courage.
“Ma'am, do you have any work? My children need food”
Cooper glanced at the hungry children.
“I have work, food, and a home”
For a moment, Grant could barely believe what he was hearing.
Then Cooper slowly opened the gate.
“Perhaps I need a husband too”
Grant froze.
He had come hoping to earn enough to feed his children.
He hadn't imagined that a wealthy woman might offer him a place in her life.
“Why would you choose me?”
Cooper looked directly into his deep grey eyes.
“Because I've been waiting for you”
Grant stood stunned.
His children gathered closer, while the open gate stood between the life they knew and an uncertain future.
Waiting for him?
