Chapter 5 - THE LETTER FROM THEIR MOTHERNathan's bullet wound was less serious than it first appeared.

The round had entered his side and exited without striking an organ.
Clara told him that getting shot to prove a point was still idiotic.
Nathan replied that technically he'd gotten shot while proving she was too stubborn to duck.
She threatened to leave the hospital room.
He stopped joking.
"Don't."
The single word changed something between them.
Clara stayed.
Daniel was admitted two floors below.
He had two cracked ribs, dehydration, and a concussion.
At noon, after Nathan was stable, Clara sat beside Daniel.
For several minutes they simply looked at each other.
Then she punched his shoulder.
He yelped.
"You deserved that."
"Probably."
"You let me think you were dead."
"I know."
"Eleven months."
"I know."
"I called morgues."
Daniel's smile disappeared.
Clara's voice broke.
"I looked at unidentified bodies online."
He shut his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
She slapped him.
Not hard.
Then hugged him.
Daniel started crying against her shoulder.
That ended her anger for the moment.
Later, Daniel explained everything.
After their mother's death, he'd found documents hidden inside the lining of an old suitcase.
Bank transfers.
Photographs.
Copies of safety reports.
Records connecting Charles Sterling and Howard Greer to decades of fraud.
Anna Morgan had collected them before going into hiding.
Daniel turned the evidence over to federal investigators.
But he had kept one thing.
Her letter.
"Why?"
"Because it wasn't evidence."
"What was in it?"
"I never opened it."
Clara stared.
"You're kidding."
"It said both our names."
"So?"
"So I thought we should read it together."
Four hours later, with Sarah's agents surrounding Grand Central Terminal, Clara and Daniel opened Locker 317.
Inside sat a small metal box.
No money.
No diamonds.
Just papers.
One cassette tape.
And a sealed envelope.
For Daniel and Clara.
They returned to the Ashford hospital suite because Nathan refused to be excluded.
Richard joined them.
Clara nearly told him to leave.
Daniel said, "He should hear it."
They opened the letter.
Their mother had written eight pages.
The first line broke Clara's heart.
If you are reading this, then the past finally became stronger than the silence I used to protect you from it.
Anna explained that she'd worked as an accountant for one of Ashford Development's Chicago divisions.
She discovered Charles Sterling bribing officials and diverting money from building repairs.
Clara's father, Michael, wanted to go to police.
Three days later, his brakes failed.
Anna knew what had happened.
She panicked.
Richard Ashford helped her disappear.
Then came the part none of them expected.
Richard did not help me only because he was my employer. He helped because years earlier, before either of us married, he had been my closest friend. We loved each other once. Not enough to destroy other lives, but enough that when I called him terrified, he came.
Clara glanced toward Richard.
He looked away.
Anna continued.
Do not confuse love with betrayal. Richard never betrayed Evelyn with me after his marriage. Our history belongs to a younger version of both of us.
Nathan raised an eyebrow.
Richard muttered, "Your mother believed in complete explanations."
Clara almost smiled.
The letter grew darker.
Anna believed someone inside Ashford Development continued feeding information to Sterling.
She suspected Howard Greer.
But she also wrote something about Evelyn.
Evelyn knew more than Richard realized. She once warned me that powerful men can make women disappear and then convince the world those women were unstable. I never forgot that.
Nathan became still.
"My mother knew Anna?"
Richard nodded slowly.
"Apparently more than she told me."
The cassette contained Anna's recorded testimony.
Sarah found an old player.
Anna's voice filled the hospital room.
Clara hadn't heard it in six years.
She covered her mouth.
Daniel gripped her hand.
Anna named projects.
Dates.
Payments.
Then she mentioned Blackline.
Finally she said:
If anything happens to me, look at Evelyn Ashford's foundation. Someone has been using it to move Sterling money. I do not know whether Evelyn knows.
Nathan looked at Richard.
"You never investigated?"
"I never heard this tape."
"Daniel had it."
Daniel shook his head.
"No. Mom sealed it."
Sarah stood.
"We need Evelyn."
They returned to the Ashford mansion.
Evelyn was gone.
Her bedroom had been emptied.
Passport missing.
One suitcase gone.
But on her desk she had left a note.
Nathan, forgive me. There are truths about your father, the Sterlings, and Victoria that I should have told you long ago. I am going to end this before anyone else gets hurt. Do not follow me.
Nathan stared at it.
"Which means we're following her."
Sarah sighed.
"Your family has a serious problem with instructions."
Marcus entered.
"We found Victoria."
Everyone turned.
"Where?"
"She made bail."
Clara couldn't believe it.
"After kidnapping Daniel?"
"The kidnapping charges are complicated. Her lawyers are arguing insufficient evidence connecting her personally to his confinement."
Daniel swore.
Marcus continued.
"But that's not the important part."
"What is?"
"She went straight to Sterling Tower."
Richard frowned.
"Her father's headquarters?"
"Yes."
Marcus placed photographs on the table.
Victoria entering the building.
Howard Greer entering twenty minutes later.
And Evelyn arriving shortly after.
Clara looked at Nathan.
"They're all in one place."
Daniel said, "That's not a meeting."
"What is it?"
"A cleanup."
Nathan grabbed his coat.
Sarah blocked him.
"You were shot yesterday."
"So?"
"So normal people recover."
"Normal people don't have mothers walking into meetings with kidnappers."
Clara took his coat away.
Nathan stared.
"What are you doing?"
"If we're going, you're not bleeding through another shirt."
Daniel laughed.
Nathan looked at Clara.
"You said 'we.'"
"Don't make it weird."
"It already is."
Richard groaned.
"Could we focus on the conspiracy?"
For the first time in twenty-four hours, everyone laughed.
It lasted five seconds.
Then Marcus's phone rang.
His expression changed.
"What?"
He listened.
"No, do not enter the building."
Nathan stepped closer.
"What happened?"
Marcus lowered the phone.
"Sterling Tower security just sealed every exit."
"Why?"
"Because someone triggered the building's fire suppression system."
Clara frowned.
"That doesn't seal doors."
"No."
Marcus looked toward Sarah.
"But the security lockdown does."
Sarah grabbed her weapon.
"Who activated it?"
Marcus answered.
"Evelyn."
Richard went pale.
Nathan whispered, "Mom, what are you doing?"
Then Clara's phone buzzed.
A video message.
From Evelyn.
Clara opened it.
Evelyn sat alone in a conference room.
Behind her stood stacks of documents.
"Clara," she said, "your mother saved my son's life before he was even born."
Clara stared.
Evelyn continued.
"And tonight I'm going to repay her."
Behind Evelyn, the conference-room door opened.
May you like
Victoria walked in holding a gun.
The video ended.
