Chapter 6 - The Golden Cage Collapses

While Jason was being escorted toward the boardroom, forty blocks north, Madison Reed’s world was ending in real-time.
In the luxury high-rise on 84th Street—a penthouse apartment Jason had leased three months ago using what he thought were Caldwell executive expense accounts—Madison sat on an imported velvet sofa, screaming into her phone.
“What do you mean the lease is canceled?!” she shrieked at the building manager standing in the doorway, backed by two uniformed NYPD officers and a private marshal.
“Ms. Reed,” the marshal said flatly, holding up a certified court order. “The lease for this unit was executed under a corporate subsidiary of Caldwell Technologies, which was underwritten by Sullivan Strategic Capital. As of 7:00 AM, the guarantor has revoked all tenant authorizations due to suspected fraudulent conversion of corporate assets. You have sixty minutes to collect your personal effects.”
“I’m pregnant!” Madison yelled, clutching her stomach with both hands, trying to use the exact same weapon that had served her so well in the St. Regis ballroom. “You can't evict a pregnant woman! This is illegal! I will sue this entire building! Jason Caldwell will have your badges!”
The marshal didn't even blink. He had seen every variation of desperate grifter Manhattan had to offer.
“Mr. Caldwell has been terminated from Caldwell Technologies, ma’am. Furthermore, there is an active civil attachment on all personal assets within this premises pending the resolution of an offshore wire fraud investigation. The jewelry, the designer bags in that closet, and the vehicle parked in the sub-basement are currently impounded.”
“No!” Madison rushed toward the master bedroom, where two movers were already cataloging the stacks of Chanel, Hermès, and Cartier boxes Jason had bought her over the past six months. “That’s mine! He gave those to me! Those are gifts!”
“Purchased with corporate cards tied to the synthetic credit line,” a calm, female voice echoed from the hallway.
Evelyn Price walked into the penthouse, flanked by a forensic accountant holding an inventory scanner.
Madison whirled around, her face pale with pure hatred. “You! You’re Sullivan’s attack dog!”
“And you’re an amateur operative who failed her assignment,” Evelyn replied coolly, looking around the opulent penthouse with casual disdain. “Julian Croft has completely scrubbed your employment history from Croft Holdings. His legal team filed an affidavit two hours ago claiming you were a rogue third-party contractor who stole proprietary market models. You’re on your own, Madison.”
Madison’s breath hitched. She stumbled back against the wall, her hand trembling against her abdomen.
“Croft... Croft promised me,” she stammered, the tears finally flowing not from performance, but from genuine, bone-chilling terror. “He said Jason was an idiot who would take the fall. He said once the stock crashed, I’d get five million dollars in an offshore trust for the baby.”
“There is no five million dollars,” Evelyn said, stepping forward and handing her an envelope. “There is only a subpoena from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. And this.”
Madison opened the envelope with trembling fingers. Inside was a legal notice from Mount Sinai Hospital’s reproductive genetics department.
Madison’s eyes scanned the paper, and her knees gave out. She collapsed onto the hardwood floor, the paper fluttering from her hands.
“You didn't think Rebecca Sullivan would investigate the pregnancy?” Evelyn asked softly, looking down at her. “You thought because Jason was arrogant enough to believe he had conquered his fertility issues, the world would take your word for it? The child isn't Jason’s, Madison. It’s Julian Croft’s junior associate’s. You couldn't even keep your lies straight for nine months.”

Madison covered her face with her hands and began to wail, a sound of absolute, irreversible ruin.
