Chapter 8 - The Exposure

I didn't flinch. I slowly raised both hands to shoulder height, keeping my palms open.

“You’re trespassing on private property, old man,” the guard sneered, stepping closer, his finger hovering over the trigger. “Keep your hands up while I call this in.”

“Check your lapel, son,” I said calmly.

The guard hesitated, his eyes narrowing. “What?”

“You are currently being filmed by three separate long-range infrared cameras positioned along the tree line,” I stated, my voice completely steady. “Furthermore, this entire encounter is transmitting via live uplink to a secure server at the Department of Justice. You are an employee of Vanguard Security. If you pull that trigger, your employer will abandon you within sixty seconds, and you will spend the rest of your natural life in a state penitentiary for capital murder.”

The guard’s hands wavered. He glanced toward the dark woods behind me.

At that exact second, the low, mechanical drone of an unmarked surveillance drone descended through the mist above the tree canopy, its green telemetry light illuminating the wet grass between us.

The guard took a slow, uneasy step back. He lowered his weapon half an inch.

“Walk away,” I said softly. “You aren't being paid enough to die for Zachary Albright.”

The guard swallowed hard, clicked his radio twice without saying a word, and turned back toward the main house.

I didn't run. I walked deliberately through the treeline, crossed the creek, and climbed into the waiting transport van where Vance opened the side door.

“Did you get it?” Vance asked as the van accelerated away into the darkness.

I handed him the drive.

Elena immediately plugged it into a sanitized, sandboxed workstation. A progress bar flashed across the dual monitors.

*DECRYPTING ARCHIVE... 100%*

Folders began populating the screen in rapid succession:

* *CITY_DEVELOPMENT_BRIBES*

* *JUDICIAL_FAVORS_2022-2024*

* *POLICE_CHIEF_OFFSHORE*

* *ILLEGAL_DOMESTIC_SURVEILLANCE_ROOTKIT*

Vance stared at the glowing monitors, whistling softly under his breath. “Dear God, Colonel. This isn't just local corruption. He’s been tapping into state-level procurement data and auctioning it off to offshore competitors.”

“Is it enough for the feds?” I asked.

“This isn't just enough for the feds,” Elena said, her eyes wide as she scrolled through hundreds of pages of unredacted logs. “This is treason, wire fraud, racketeering, and systemic extortion. He’s looking at twenty-five years minimum without parole.”

“Good,” I said. “Now call the Assistant U.S. Attorney. Tell them Hannah Montgomery Albright is ready to provide state evidence.”
