Chapter 5 - THE SECRET FROM THE PAST

A week passed without any sign of her.
No flowers. No notes. No photographs. The silence was worse than the threats. Because it meant she was planning something. Gathering strength. Waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
I spent my evenings going through old boxes in my mother's attic. I was looking for documents—Claire's things, legal papers, anything that might help me build a case against Vanessa or give me some kind of leverage.
Late one evening, beneath a stack of old photo albums, I found a sealed envelope.
It was addressed to me. In Claire's handwriting.
My breath caught. I turned it over. It had been sealed for years. I didn't remember her ever giving this to me. On the back, in her soft, looping handwriting, were the words: For Adrian, to be opened only when the truth is needed most.
My hands trembled as I broke the seal. I pulled out the letter and began to read.
*My dearest Adrian,*
*If you are reading this, then something has happened. Or perhaps, the thing I always feared might happen... finally did.*
*I need to tell you something that I have never told another living soul. Not even you. I kept it from you because I didn't want you to worry. I didn't want you to look at me differently. But if you are reading this, then it is too important to stay hidden any longer.*
*Vanessa is not who she pretends to be.*
I stopped reading. My heart hammered against my ribs. Claire had known?
I forced myself to keep going.
*We met once, years ago. Before you and I were married. She came to the hospital where I worked. She was seeing someone else at the time. A doctor. She was obsessed with him. Possessive. Unstable. When he tried to end the relationship, she threatened him. She threatened herself. She even threatened to harm his family.*
*They issued a restraining order against her. She vanished. I thought she had moved away. I thought I would never see her again.*
*Then, months later... you introduced her to me. As your new colleague. As your friend. And I realized. She had changed her last name. She had reinvented herself. And she had found you. On purpose.*
*I never told you, Adrian, because I had no proof. Because I thought... perhaps she had changed. Perhaps she really was just a nice woman who wanted to be your friend. And then... you began to like her. More than a friend. And I became afraid. If I told you what I knew, you might think I was jealous. That I was making things up to keep her away.*
*But I watched her. I saw the way she looked at you. The way she studied everything about me. How I dressed. How I spoke. She was copying me, Adrian. She was trying to become me. Because she believes that if she can be the woman you loved, you will love her too.*
*Be careful, my love. She does not love you. She loves the idea of you. She wants what I have. And I am terrified that if anything ever happens to me... she will try to take my place. And she will not care who gets hurt along the way.*
*If you are reading this... then I was right. Protect Mia. Protect yourself. And remember this: the woman you know as Vanessa... she is dangerous. And she has been lying to you from the very beginning.*
*With all my love,*
*Claire.*
I lowered the letter. My hands were shaking so hard I nearly dropped it.
Vanessa had known me before we met. She had sought me out deliberately. She had changed her name. She had been watching me, planning, positioning herself... for years.
I thought back to how we had met. She had been so kind. So helpful. She had seemed to appear exactly when I needed someone. After Claire got sick. When I was struggling. When I was vulnerable.
She hadn't appeared by chance. She had waited. She had chosen her moment perfectly.
And Claire had known all along. She had carried this secret alone, for years, saying nothing because she thought I wouldn't believe her. Because she didn't want to seem jealous or cruel.
Tears stung my eyes. I folded the letter carefully and placed it in my pocket.
Claire had been trying to warn me. Even from beyond the grave.
And now I understood everything. The jealousy. The hatred toward Mia. The obsession with replacing Claire. Vanessa hadn't just been jealous of Claire's memory. She had been jealous of Claire's place in my life. She had spent years preparing to take everything Claire had. Everything Claire was. Including me. And including Mia—because Mia was a living, breathing reminder of the woman she wanted to erase completely.
I stood up and walked downstairs, my mind racing. I needed to find out more. I needed proof. I needed to know who Vanessa really was, what her real name was, and exactly what she had done in her past.
Mom was in the kitchen. She looked up when I walked in, saw my face, and stood up quickly.
"Adrian? What is it? You look like you've seen a ghost."
I pulled out the letter and laid it on the table before her.
"Read this," I said.
Mom picked it up. She read it slowly. When she finished, she looked up at me, her face pale.
"Claire knew," Mom whispered. "All this time... and she never said a word."
"Because she knew I wouldn't believe her," I said. "Vanessa is good at pretending. She has been pretending for years. She didn't just meet me by accident, Mom. She sought me out. She changed her name. She built an entire new identity just to get close to me."
Mom sat down heavily in a chair.
"That explains everything," she said quietly. "The way she watched you. The way she studied Claire. The way she tried to copy everything Claire did. I noticed it, you know. I thought it was just her way of trying to fit in. But it was never about fitting in. It was about replacing."
"Exactly," I said. "And if Claire is right... Vanessa has done this before. Stalked someone. Threatened people. Hurt people who got in her way. She isn't just jealous, Mom. She is dangerous. And she has been planning this for a very long time."
Mom looked at me, her eyes filled with fear.
"What do we do now?" she asked.
I looked at the letter. At Claire's handwriting. At her warning.
"We find out who she really is," I said. "We dig up everything she has hidden. And then... we expose her. We show the police exactly what she is. And we make sure she never comes near any of us again."
But even as I said it, a cold realization settled over me. Vanessa had already proven how far she was willing to go. She had destroyed evidence. She had stalked us. She had threatened us. And she had been planning this for years.
May you like
Claire's letter had given me the truth. But the truth alone might not be enough to stop her. Because Vanessa had already shown me that she was willing to do anything to get what she wanted.
Anything.
