Chapter 34 - The Gilded Leash

The unspoken threat regarding Chloe hung in the room like the stench of sulfur. I didn't move toward the chair. Instead, I shifted my weight, placing myself squarely between Walter and the bottom of the staircase.
"You really believe you're untouchable, don't you?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly before I locked it down into steel. "You sat at our table. You watched Melissa sneer at my daughter. You watched Greg strut around like he owned the family name, while you were pulling their strings like cheap marionettes. You let Evelyn think she was the grand matriarch, all while you were draining her dry."
"Evelyn was an insufferable fool," Walter said without a trace of hesitation. "She demanded the appearance of grand wealth without the stomach for the decisions required to maintain it. She wanted the winter home in Naples, the private schooling for Melissa’s boys, the illusion that the Vance name still commanded fear and respect in this county. Do you have any idea how much money that facade consumed every month?"
He took a step closer, the brass eagle head of his cane catching the lamplight.
"Greg was worse," Walter continued, his tone clinical. "Greg lacked his mother's charm and had twice her greed. When the shipping contracts began drying up after the federal audit in November, Greg panicked. He wanted to liquidate the regional terminals. He wanted to sell our grandfather’s land to a private equity firm from Chicago. I told him no. And when you began asking questions about the trust distributions, Greg lost his mind entirely."
"So you gave him permission to kill me," I said, the horror of it settling into my bones. "You told him that if I died on that highway, the voting shares would revert to the trust—which you control."
Walter sighed, a heavy, disappointed breath, as if I were a promising student who had failed a simple arithmetic test.
"I told Greg to solve his problem," Walter murmured. "I told him that an obstinate niece was an obstacle he was entirely unequipped to handle. Greg took that advice and applied the blunt instrument of a coward. Tampering with the brake lines of a family vehicle in broad daylight? In an industrial lot with three security cameras overhead? It was amateurish. It was clumsy. It brought the federal authorities directly to our front door."
"And that’s why you sold him out," I realized aloud. "You gave Marcus the files on Greg and Evelyn not to help me, but to clean house. You used me to cut off the gangrenous limbs before the rot reached you."
"A good gardener prunes the dead branches, Nora," Walter said smoothly. "Evelyn and Greg were dead weight. They served their purpose for forty years, and then they became liabilities. But you... you are different. You have your grandfather’s spine. You have his clarity."
He gestured around my living room, taking in the modest furnishings, the framed family photographs, the quiet simplicity of the home I had built for Chloe far away from the toxic sprawl of Oak Ridge.
"You don't care about their frivolous status," Walter said, lowering his cane until the tip touched the floorboards. "You care about security. You care about legacy. You care about that little girl sleeping upstairs. Which is why you and I are going to make an arrangement. You hand over the Oak Ridge ledger, and in exchange, the foundation guarantees Chloe's future. Full trust allocations. An education trust in Zurich. Complete financial immunity for you and your daughter for the rest of your lives."
"And if I refuse?" I asked.
May you like
Walter’s smile faded entirely, leaving behind the hard, predatory mask of a man who had never lost a war in seventy years.
"If you refuse," Walter said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper, "then tomorrow morning, Marcus will discover that the anonymous shell corporation that held the laundered funds was registered in your name three years ago. With your signature on the incorporation papers. And while you are spending the next fifteen years in a federal penitentiary defending yourself against charges of conspiracy and corporate fraud, Chloe will become a ward of the state. Or worse... she will go to Melissa."
