Chapter 14 - The Lobby Ambush

The confrontation did not wait for the courtroom.
At two o’clock that afternoon, the quiet elegance of the Huntington Center lobby was shattered by the sharp clack of high heels and the shrill, indignant voice of a woman who had never accepted the word *no*.
Evelyn Vance pushed through the security turnstiles, brushing past the bewildered guard who had attempted to verify her visitor badge. She wore her vintage fur-trimmed coat—a garment purchased during the peak of Thomas’s commercial building career—and oversized sunglasses that failed to hide the deep, red bags of rage and sleeplessness under her eyes.
"I don't need an appointment to see my own daughter!" Evelyn’s voice rang through the polished marble atrium, echoing off the three-story glass facade. Several corporate workers turned around, startled. "Natalie Vance is the head of this firm, and I am her mother! Tell her to come down here right this instant, or I will have the building management throw this whole floor into an uproar!"
The security guard, an imposing man named Reynolds, stepped into her path, his radio held firmly in his hand. "Ma'am, you cannot proceed to the elevators without an escort. You need to step back to the reception desk."
"Do not lay a hand on me!" Evelyn shrieked, clutching her designer purse like a shield. "My daughter stole everything from my family! She took our home! She took our name! She is hiding up there in her glass tower while her father sleeps on a cot!"
The elevator doors at the north bank slid open with a whisper.
Natalie stepped out.
She was wearing a charcoal wool tailored suit, her hair pulled back into an elegant knot. There was no color in her face except the cool determination in her eyes. Beside her walked Uncle Greg, holding a slim leather portfolio, looking as calm as an executioner.

The entire lobby went completely silent. Evelyn froze, her mouth open, the theatrical tears on her cheeks suddenly looking cheap and ridiculous under the white fluorescent lights.
"Mother," Natalie said. Her voice was not loud, but it possessed a terrifying, low frequency that cut through the cavernous space with absolute clarity. "You have thirty seconds to lower your voice, turn around, and exit this building before Officer Reynolds escorts you out in handcuffs for criminal trespass."
