Chapter 5: The File That Changed Everything

The name on the tablet stayed on the screen.

Amelia Harris Investigations.

Nobody in the room moved.

General Harris stared at the words as if they belonged to someone else.

But they didn’t.

They belonged to his daughter.

The daughter who supposedly vanished.

The daughter who supposedly wanted nothing to do with him.

The daughter who had somehow built an entire investigation company while hiding from the world.

“Say that again,” Harris said.

The guard swallowed.

“The vehicle registration traces back to Amelia Harris Investigations, sir.””

Harris walked closer.

“Who owns the company?””

The guard looked uncomfortable.

“Officially? No one.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“The company was created twenty years ago. The records list a legal representative, but the ownership documents were sealed.””

Harris looked at Daniel.

Daniel didn’t look surprised.

“You knew.””

Daniel remained silent.

“Didn’t you?”” Harris asked again.

“Yes.””

The answer came quietly.

Ruby looked between them.

“You knew where my mom was?””

Daniel shook his head immediately.

“No.””

“Then how did you know about the company?””

“Because I helped her create it.””

Ruby looked confused.

Harris felt something tighten in his chest.

“You helped my daughter disappear.””

Daniel held his gaze.

“I helped your daughter survive.””

The words hung in the room.

A normal man might have reacted with anger.

But Harris had learned something over years of command.

Sometimes the first answer you received was not the truth.

Sometimes it was only the beginning.

“Tell me everything,” Harris said.

Daniel nodded.

“Twenty years ago, Amelia came to me because she discovered something about Colonel Reed.””

Harris looked at the forged document on the table.

“What?””

“She found that Reed had been accessing restricted files under your authorization.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It didn’t make sense to her either.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“She believed you were being framed.””

Harris stared.

“But she told Ruby I was dangerous.””

Daniel nodded.

“Because she believed you were being watched.””

“By Reed?””

“Not just Reed.””

The general’s eyes narrowed.

“Who else?””

Daniel looked at the ceiling cameras again.

“People who were higher than him.””

A silence followed.

Ruby pulled her backpack closer.

“Are they the bad people?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Harris looked at her.

Children deserved simple answers.

But sometimes adults created situations where simple answers no longer existed.

“There are people who did bad things,” Harris said carefully.

Ruby nodded.

“Are they looking for Mom?””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised her.

But she didn’t panic.

Instead, she asked:

“Are they looking for me too?””

Harris felt a painful weight in his chest.

“Yes.””

Ruby’s face changed.

A mixture of fear and acceptance.

Like she had already known.

Daniel noticed.

“She’s been living with this her whole life.””

Harris looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

“Amelia never stayed anywhere longer than a few months.””

The general looked at Ruby.

“She moved you around?””

Ruby nodded.

“We had different houses.””

“How many?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did you go to school?””

“Sometimes.””

The answer was heartbreaking.

Harris looked away.

A child should have been worried about homework.

Not hiding from people hunting her family.

Daniel continued.

“Amelia created a system. Different names. Different addresses. Different records.””

“She erased herself.””

“Yes.””

Harris looked down.

“Why didn’t she come to me?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he answered:

“Because she thought she had evidence that you were part of the reason it happened.””

The general’s expression hardened.

“You said she believed I was being framed.””

“She did.””

“Then why suspect me?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because the evidence had your signature.””

The room went quiet.

Again.

Harris looked at the forged authorization.

“I never signed that.””

“I know.””

“How?””

“Because Amelia knew.””

That stopped him.

Daniel continued.

“She spent years trying to prove it wasn’t you.””

Harris stared.

“Then why hide from me?””

“Because whoever forged your signature wanted her to believe you were involved.””

The general slowly understood.

A trap.

Not just against him.

Against both of them.

Someone had separated a father and daughter by making each one afraid of the other.

“Where is the rest of the evidence?”” Harris asked.

Daniel looked at Ruby.

“Amelia kept copies.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

Harris frowned.

“You worked with her.””

“Yes.””

“You helped her build an entire company.””

“Yes.””

“And she didn’t tell you?””

Daniel shook his head.

“She learned not to trust anyone completely.””

The words hurt.

Because Harris understood why.

She had learned that from him.

Or at least from what she believed about him.

A knock came at the door.

Everyone turned.

Another guard entered.

“General, we have something else.””

Harris nodded.

The guard placed a folder on the table.

“This was found inside the vehicle.””

Daniel immediately stood.

“What vehicle?””

“The black sedan.””

Harris opened the folder.

Inside was a collection of photographs.

The first showed Amelia.

Older.

Different.

But clearly her.

The second showed Ruby.

Walking to school.

The third showed Harris himself.

Leaving military headquarters.

His blood ran cold.

“They were watching all of us.””

Daniel nodded.

“For a long time.””

Harris flipped through the pictures faster.

Dates.

Locations.

Years of surveillance.

Then one photograph stopped him.

It showed Amelia standing outside a hospital.

Holding a newborn baby.

Ruby.

But behind her was someone else.

A man standing near the entrance.

Harris looked closer.

His face was partially hidden.

But the uniform was visible.

A military uniform.

Not Reed’s.

Someone else.

“Who is that?””

Daniel stepped closer.

His expression changed.

“I don’t know.””

Harris looked at him.

“You’ve never seen him?””

“No.””

The general studied the photograph.

The man was watching Amelia.

Not randomly.

Purposefully.

Then Harris noticed something else.

A small symbol on the man’s jacket.

A symbol he had seen before.

His face drained of color.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You recognize it?””

Harris didn’t answer.

Because he did.

Years ago, during a classified investigation, that symbol appeared in a file.

A file he had been ordered never to open again.

A file that disappeared from military archives.

“The person behind this…” Harris whispered.

Ruby looked up.

“Who is it?””

Harris slowly placed the photograph down.

His voice became almost impossible to hear.

“Someone who should not exist.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Harris looked at the symbol.

“Because that insignia belonged to a unit that was officially shut down twenty-five years ago.””

The guards exchanged looks.

“Which unit, sir?””

Harris didn’t want to say it.

Because saying it made it real.

But he had spent his life facing impossible truths.

Finally, he answered.

“The Phoenix Division.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“You know about them?””

“I thought they were gone.””

Ruby looked frightened.

“What is Phoenix?””

Harris looked at the little girl.

A child caught in the middle of a war she never chose.

“A group that was created for missions nobody was supposed to know about.””

Daniel stared.

“Then Amelia wasn’t just running from Reed.””

Harris shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the photographs.

At his daughter.

At his granddaughter.

At the people who had watched them for years.

“She was running from something much bigger.””

Suddenly, the lights in the conference room flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire building went dark.

Emergency alarms began screaming.

The guards immediately moved.

“Power failure?””

“No,” another guard said through the radio.

His voice was tense.

“General…”

“What?””

The response came after a pause.

“Someone just accessed the main security system.””

Harris looked at Daniel.

“Can you identify them?””

The guard’s voice came through again.

“We’re trying.””

A few seconds passed.

Then:

“General…”

“What is it?””

The guard sounded shaken.

“The access code used…”

Everyone waited.

“It belongs to you.””

Harris froze.

“That’s impossible.””

The guard looked at the screen.

“No, sir.””

A pause.

“The system recognized it as your original authorization.””

Daniel slowly stood.

Ruby grabbed Harris’s hand.

And then every monitor in the room turned on at once.

One message appeared on every screen.

No name.

No signature.

Just five words.

*“STOP LOOKING FOR AMELIA.””*

Harris stared at the message.

May you like

Then a second line appeared.

*“OR YOU WILL LOSE RUBY TOO.””*
