Chapter 35 - The Living Blueprint

My fingers shook so violently that it took me three attempts to press the plastic play button.

The reel clicked. Static hissed from the small speaker, followed by the familiar, rasping cough that had haunted my childhood home every single morning.

*“If you’re listening to this, Donnie,”* Thomas’s voice rasped through the machine, sounding tired, ancient, and hollowed out by grief. *“Then Vance didn't keep his word, and Campbell has already brought the sweepers into the valley.”*

Rex let out a tiny, high-pitched whimper and rested his massive chin directly on my father’s empty chair.

*“People will tell you I was a monster, son. They’ll tell you I took the spirit of man's best friend and weaponized it into something vile. Maybe they’re right. In Vietnam, I watched forty-two boys die in the scrub because we couldn't hear the wires tripping. When the Army gave me the MACV-SOG budget in ’71, I swore I’d never let an American patrol walk blind again. But Campbell... Campbell didn't want scouts. He wanted autonomous, self-replicating shock troops that didn't leave fingerprints. Genetic hardware you could deploy and deny.”*

A long pause hung on the tape, accompanied by the clink of ice against glass.

*“The original Rex—the real one, the one in that photograph on my mantle—died saving my life in the A Shau Valley. He took three rounds meant for my spine. When I came home, I couldn't let him go. I took his preserved tissue and spent thirty years decoding the specific neurological imprint of his loyalty. I cracked it, Donald. But to make them work, Campbell required a master frequency. A bloodline link that couldn't be hacked by foreign signals.”*

My breath hitched. The hair on my arms stood on end.

*“An animal only follows the pack leader, Donnie. And a synthetic animal needs an anchor woven into its very marrow. I didn't key the Chimera genome to a digital radio code. I keyed it to the Mercer vocal cadence and the acoustic frequency of our bone structure.”*

The voice on the tape began to break, thick with unshed tears.

*“I didn't steal Rex to save him from Campbell. I brought him home so he could memorize your scent. Because when the rest of the pack awakens... they will only answer to the bloodline that wrote them into existence.”*
