Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

Judge Vance stared down at the photograph in the exhibit binder with unmistakable disgust.
The image showed Melissa standing at a teller counter, sliding a notary-stamped folder across the counter while wearing the exact diamond bracelet Julian had bought with our joint grocery account.
"Mr. Hayes," Judge Vance said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy quiet. "Do you wish to confer with your client before I take the next administrative step?"
Hayes leaned over Julian, whispering frantically behind his hand while Julian stared at the tabletop like a paralyzed statue.
Julian’s eyes were bloodshot, darting from the bank photo to the judge, his breathing shallow and rapid.
"Your Honor," Hayes finally said, his voice completely defeated. "My client asserts his Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination regarding the financial exhibits."
"He certainly has that constitutional right in a criminal proceeding," Judge Vance replied coldly.
"However, in a civil dissolution action, this court is fully permitted to draw an adverse factual inference from his refusal to testify."
She turned her gaze directly onto Melissa Grant, who was now weeping openly into a crumpled tissue.
"Ms. Grant, you are not a named party in this divorce action, but you are an officer of this court, are you not?" the judge asked sharply.
The entire room seemed to freeze anew.
"Answer the court, Ms. Grant," Judge Vance demanded, her tone leaving zero room for evasion.
Melissa lowered her tissue, her mascara running in dark, jagged streaks down her pale cheeks.
"I... I am a licensed notary public in the state of Missouri," Melissa choked out, barely audible above a whisper.
"And did you affix your official state notary seal to this power-of-attorney form claiming Audrey Collins appeared before you in person?"
Melissa looked desperately toward Julian, but Julian wouldn't even turn his head to look at her; he was staring straight at the mahogany wood, completely abandoning her.
"Julian told me she knew about it!" Melissa sobbed, the dam completely breaking. "He told me Audrey was sick from the pregnancy and gave permission over the phone!"

"He said she just wanted to close the accounts cleanly without walking into a bank! I only stamped it because he swore it was legal!"
"You stamped your own name to a fraudulent conveyance involving twelve million dollars!" Judge Vance snapped, her voice cracking like thunder.
