Chapter 7 - The Truth About the Crash

Chapter 7 - The Truth About the Crash

Ray was not arrested immediately.

That surprised Daniel.

Ortiz explained that investigators were building a case, not a television episode.

They searched Ray's apartment under warrant.

They seized financial records and electronic devices.

They questioned him again.

Daniel was told only fragments.

It was enough to know things were moving.

Then, on a rainy Thursday afternoon, Ray walked into the hospital.

Daniel was coming from the cafeteria when he saw him.

Ray had no visitor badge.

No bag.

No coat despite the weather.

He was moving quickly toward the family waiting area.

Evan was there.

Alone for less than a minute while Marisol spoke to a nurse.

Daniel's entire body reacted before his mind did.

He stepped between them.

Ray stopped.

"Move."

"No."

"I need to talk to Evan."

"No."

"He's my nephew."

Daniel's voice stayed low.

"Then you can talk to him when the hospital and his social worker say you can."

Ray glanced past him.

"Evan."

The boy stood.

Daniel held out one hand without looking back.

"Stay where you are."

Ray laughed bitterly.

"Look at you."

Daniel said nothing.

"Playing father now?"

Evan heard it.

Daniel knew because the boy's face changed.

Ray had just said too much.

Daniel stepped closer.

"You need to leave."

"You don't tell me what to do."

"No. Security does."

Ray looked toward the nurses' station.

Two security officers were already coming.

Then Ortiz appeared from the elevator with another detective.

Ray saw him.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Ortiz approached slowly.

"Raymond Bennett?"

Ray backed away.

"I came to see my sister."

"No, you came to an area you've been told not to enter."

"I have rights."

"You do. And we'll explain all of them."

The second detective moved to Ray's side.

Ortiz continued.

"We need you to come with us."

"Am I under arrest?"

Ortiz looked at him.

"Yes."

Evan grabbed the back of Daniel's jacket.

Daniel felt it.

He did not move.

Ray looked at Evan.

"Don't believe everything your mother told you."

Daniel stepped sideways, blocking his view.

"That's enough."

Ray's face hardened.

For one moment Daniel thought he might lunge.

He didn't.

The detectives took him away.

The hallway went quiet.

Daniel turned.

Evan was shaking.

Daniel crouched.

"You okay?"

"No."

"Me neither."

That seemed to help.

Marisol hurried back and put an arm around Evan.

Daniel stood beside them.

He did not ask what charges Ray faced until later.

Identity theft.

Financial fraud.

Evidence tampering.

And charges connected to the deliberate damage to Laura's brake line were expected once the prosecutor completed review of the forensic evidence.

The old company theft might or might not produce charges after so many years.

Daniel found that he did not care as much as he thought he would.

The past mattered.

But Laura was still fighting for her life in the present.

That night, at 2:17 in the morning, Daniel's phone rang.

He woke instantly.

Hospital.

He drove there through nearly empty streets.

Evan was already in the family room with Marisol.

He stood when Daniel entered.

"She woke up."

Daniel stopped.

"Laura?"

Evan nodded, crying and smiling at the same time.

Daniel hugged him before thinking.

Evan hugged him back.

A doctor came out fifteen minutes later.

"She's conscious. Confused, but responsive."

"Can Evan see her?"

"For a few minutes."

Evan disappeared into the room.

Daniel stayed outside.

He did not expect to be invited in.

Then a nurse opened the door.

"Mr. Mercer?"

Daniel stood.

"She asked for you."

He entered slowly.

Laura's eyes found him.

For a second, neither of them spoke.

She looked older.

So did he.

Twelve years sat between them like another person in the room.

Laura's voice was weak.

"Did he find you?"

Daniel looked toward Evan.

Then back at her.

"He broke my headlight."

Laura blinked.

"What?"

"He broke my headlight."

Evan looked embarrassed.

"I didn't know how else to stop him."

Laura closed her eyes.

For one terrible second Daniel thought she was in pain.

Then he realized she was laughing.

It was faint.

But unmistakable.

Daniel laughed too.

Laura opened her eyes again.

"I'm sorry about your car."

"I'll send you the bill."

"Daniel."

The laughter disappeared.

Her eyes filled.

"I wrote to you."

"I know."

"I thought—"

"I know."

"Ray said—"

"I know that too."

Laura looked toward Evan.

Daniel followed her gaze.

The boy stood at the end of the bed.

Laura reached out.

Evan took her hand.

Then Laura looked at Daniel.

"There's something else you need to know about him."

Daniel's breath caught.

He moved closer.

"You don't have to do this now."

"Yes."

"Laura."

"Daniel."

He stopped.

Her voice was barely more than air.

"Evan is your son."

No dramatic music.

No shouting.

No shock powerful enough to make the machines stop.

Just four words.

Daniel looked at Evan.

The boy was already watching him.

Daniel sat down because his legs suddenly felt unreliable.

Laura began crying.

"I tried to tell you."

Daniel nodded.

"I know."

"I thought you didn't want him."

"I didn't know."

"I know that now."

Evan looked between them.

"So..."

Daniel wiped his face.

He had not realized he was crying.

"So," Evan repeated.

Daniel laughed once.

"We're going to get a test."

Evan's face fell.

Daniel immediately understood.

"Not because I don't believe your mother."

"Then why?"

"Because this is important. And important things deserve to be clear."

Laura squeezed Evan's hand.

"He's right."

Evan considered that.

Then nodded.

Daniel looked at Laura.

"Rest."

She closed her eyes.

He stood to leave.

"Daniel."

He turned.

Laura looked at him.

"Don't disappear."

Daniel looked at Evan.

May you like

Then back at her.

"I won't."
